Any of you baws duck hunt the Attakapas Island WMA before? I am looking into it for camping/hunting trip this duck season. I cannot find much info on the duck hunting online, which has me worried. We would go scouting and pick spots before showing up to hunt, but wanted to check in here to see if it was even worth the drive.

Where are you based? I've been trying to find the time to check it out myself. I'm in New Orleans so it's not that far a drive.

Ive hunted the area a few years back. It has ducks, but you really need to scout. Don't be surprised if you show up and someones in your spot that you scouted weeks for as well. Most of the guys who hunt that area are hardcore and arent afraid to show up to the spot at 2 or 3 AM. That being said, you couldnt pay me to camp out there. Pretty sure the mosquitos would carry you away at night unless the temps are below the 50s. If you are new to the area, I highly suggest a GPS, and even then its a bit tricky. To get back into the really deep stuff, mud motors are your only option, and Id bring another prop or two.

You aren’t gonna get any honest responses on an outdoor board when it comes to public duck hunting

I don’t hunt there anymore because of all the stumps Last time I was there we sunk after we hit a stump. We floated on all the greenheads we shot until another boat showed up

And it wasn’t very fun hunting It takes longer to boat out there than it does to shoot a limit

I am based out of Baton Rouge. The boat we would be using is a aluminum hull (19') but it is not a mud motor. Plan was to boat in on the big water and then use a kayak/pirogue to get to spots.

That's Mississippi slang for there are as many ducks as there are stars in the sky.

I scouted there when the water was high last year. 17 cc G3. I came to a stop more than once running around on silt. This was in channels that were 30' wide or better. Main channel eddys were tossing my boat around.

Too sketchy for me.

15 years ago it was great. Silted in post 11 flood. More silt since then. Birds are only there when the Wax is at its worst weather wise. If it’s a hard north wind or crazy hard south wind, birds will be there to get out of the waves / chop in the Wax or offshore of the Wax. Otherwise , no birds.
