I know someone who bought a S&W M&P when Obama won, along with 10 magazines and a case of Golden Tiger. He's probably halfway through that case now. He hasn't changed his mind on owning it, he just doesn't shoot it a lot. He does shoot handguns more, and shoots the hell out of some target stuff. And every so often he takes the AR out and runs a mag or so through it.

Some of us bought an upper and a lower and saw how easy it was to snap together, got more uppers, and started building stripped from the ground up. The collection tends to grow fast that way.

I can relate to that.

Obama is the #1 gun salesman of all time. And I think the NSSA calculated over a trillion rounds of 5.56, x39 and 9mm sold during his tenure.

Truth be told we're still in his tenure.

Anyways, I can relate to what you're conveying. I'm not sure building an AR is a hobby. Building multiple ARs each to meet a specific need and then being able to competently utilize your build in an effort to fill said need ... yeah, that might be a hobby.

Paper punching is a hobby from small bore to large.

Collecting is a hobby.

Handloading and reloading is a hobby, especially when efforting to fit the perfect round to the perfect rifle.

Having to ask what parts are needed to build your first AR on a message board ... that's not a hobby. That's ... lol, I dunno what that is.

There are 100s of videos clearly defining every type of AR build known to man ... on YouTube.

Anyways, just mho.

True hobbiests don't need to ask the questions the OP is asking/trolling. He's not asking the right questions and he's not interested in the correct answers.

Even so, this board has been asked this question 100+ times ... a half dozen in fewer pages scrolling back.

Anyways. Someone made a comment about the 10k-20k rounds being put through line unit A2s and A3s back in the day .... and that's true. But all combat infantry line units have full time dedicated Armors with assistants, on a company level, keeping those GI rifles running.

Also, line infantry troops keep their weapons immaculate. NCOs ensure that they are properly cleaned and lubed before they ever are allowed back on the rack and then armors double check them again.

Again, this "a gun is a hobby" thing ... I dunno.

Shooting the gun is a hobby, yes.

Whatever, it's a general thing I suppose.

Hunting is a hobby.
Paper punching is a hobby.
Clays and skeet ... a hobby.
Local IPSC and IDPA tournaments ... a hobby.
Collecting fine weaponry is a hobby.
Gunsmithing can be a hobby or a profession but that's a lot more than just putting together pieces.

Generational differences I suppose ... philosophical differences when it comes to firearms.

A hobby can be anything that you choose. My hobby with guns actually began in 2006, when Call of Duty Modern Warfare came out for Xbox 360. I would collect as many weapons as possible and upgrade them by getting kills in the game. I’d add thermals, ACOGs, Red Dots, Magpuls, tape, rubber bands and cool color schemes like Reptilian Green Scale.

This resulted in me being very deadly with certain precision weapons like the FAL and the FN SCAR. I’m very sure that my years of experience battling in the shoothouse level would serve me well in real life apocalyptic scenarios. My KD ratio was a 2:1

That’s pretty darn impressive and proves that I’m a good shot under pressure. And it proves that I can successfully assemble accurate weapons.

I've acquired knife skills in my other hobby: collecting and saving ammunition. We have a big hog trap and catch like 20 at a time. Rather than use 20-25 rounds of 22LR I elect to round up the boys and take out the larger boars and sows with the 22 and then get in there, grab em by the tail and put the knife right into their armpit.

I have videos, but would probably get a knock on the door if I shared them.

Just finished ordering all my parts for my 6.5 Grendel build.

All in about $1300, including the scope and two mags. I have been hunting those deals pretty hard.

PSA lower receiver
Geissele two stage SSA-E trigger
Magpul MOE stock and pistol grip
BCM upper receiver and handguard
Raptor charging handle
Odin Works barrel, BCG, and gas system
JCB solutions muzzle break
Riton primal 3 scope and mount

Excited to put it all together. I expect this to be a hog killing machine

I have a Riton Optics 3 Primal 3-18X50 scope on my 6.5 CM. Love it! I can use the MRAD reticle for bullet drops for fast shots or I can dial in my shot with the exposed turrets. The FFP makes it so I don't need to worry about what magnification setting the scope is at. A lot of scope for the money. I have been turning the knobs on mine for over 6 months and back to zero each time.

I'm looking to get a DD M4V7 in either milspec+ or Rattlecan. I would prefer to find a deal somewhere under $2,000. Where do you guys go online to find them? Also, I've never had a gun shipped to an FFL. Anything to worry about? I've also seen some people say some online retailers ship the guns without magazines. If a magazine comes with the purchase, how does that work? Sorry for all the questions!

If you go to gun.deals, it's basically a bot that finds the lowest price from a ton of sellers. For the model you're looking for, Eurooptic has the lowest price (Milspec + for $1,599). LINK

Eurooptic is a good outfit; I've ordered from them multiple times. You'll select your local FFL at checkout, and the gun will be shipped to that dealer, where you'll go to pick it up and pay them a nominal fee (usually $25-$50) for the background check.

This version ships with a magazine, but I would buy more if this is your first AR. Palmetto State Armory typically has a good deal on a rifle bag plus 7 or 10 pmags for $100.

what's more important to you? the paint/color or the internals.

here's a DDM4v7 with Magpul Pro flip ups sights ($220 value) and a Geissele SSA trigger ($245 value).

$1799 - Tombstone Tactical (in stock)

$1619 - Family Firearms (out of stock)

I actually bought FDE earlier this year from the lgs. Swapped out the stock, grip, trigger guard, and trigger. Put a LaRue 2-stage trigger in it. Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x24.

This S&W seems like a good deal if you’re not looking for fancy.

LINK
And this FN seems like a nice gun for $900.

A name that hasn’t been mentioned, but I REALLY like my armalite m15 tac16.

Armalite is owned by Strategic Armory Corps, who is a holding company for a few high end companies like McMillian Firearms and AWC silencers
