Can you find these things for less than $150? I have a jack plane and a block plane, but obviously want/need to add a few others to the shop like a rabbet or shoulder plane, moulding planes, etc.

Seems these are either hard to find (moulding planes) or insanely expensive (rabbets, shoulders, combination planes).

I have a bunch (meaning like 10 or 15)

Most of mine are old Stanley Bailey's off ebay.
Have two Lie-Nielsens. They are the tits.

Seriously, there is a guy in Kenilworth with a beautiful collection. Lives on Chippenham, I believe. You should sign up for Nextdoor and select Kenilworth ( if you haven't already) and put out some feelers. He had them out at a garage sale not too long ago. Good luck.

I have about 20. I have sold off all my old ones and only have modern ones now. I have a mixture of Lie Nielsen, and Veritas from Lee Valley. In general, I prefer the Veritas, especially with PM-V11 irons. I also have a couple of Bridge City Tools planes and they are on a different level but still not at the level of the high-end custom infill planes. I am primarily a machine woodworker but find a good selection of hand tools extremely useful and the quality of hand tools today is better than it has ever been, if you are willing to pay for the premium brands. Not to suggest that good quality antiques aren't of excellent quality but I am not into restoring and fettling old planes and the steel quality is better today from the top brands.

My favorite plane that I own:

with depth skids attached I use for precise thicknessing of inlay

It is both a high angle and low angle plane in one.

I’ve seen that one before. Like you said Bridge City is another level in pretty much every respect.

My favorite by far is a Lie-Nielsen low angle block plan. It’s brass. I use it on pretty much on every project I build.

Damn obtuse! That's an incredible plane.

And to the op, I have no experience with old planes, all of mine are lie Nielson, but you can find them on ebay, or at flea markets. Also, check out "unplugged woodworkers" on Facebook. Very knowledgeable guys and usually have people selling stuff.

honestly for a high quality hand tool i would be scared if they were not expensive. craftsmanship and dependable accuracy of the tool are things that dont come cheap

Well no doubt. But I can't afford to spend in excess of $150 for multiple planes. That's just batshit crazy. I can buy power tools for the same price as some of these hand planes I'm seeing.

i hear ya, and agree, not saying its a good or bad price, i dont really know the right value on one, but that hand plane will last 50-75 years while that power tool "maybe" 10-15?

Since I’m not a professional I don’t have bridge city tools. If I were that would likely be different.

But that bridge city plane that obtuse showed is a $400 plane. And worth every penny.
