my female is in line to produce christmas puppies but I will likely wait till spring to breed here - I don't want here "puppied" during hunting season.

My 3 month old. She has eye brows that are now about 1 1/3" long. Driving the women nuts.

Dang, I clicked on thread thinking someone found Scout. Boykins are notorious for jumping out of boats and not heeding calls from what I've read on Scout's page.

1st not trying to be a s/a, just thoughts and reflections. Have had Boykins since 1981. With breed standard being 30-40 lbs on males and 25-35 on females, I have always considered them some what of a 'niche' dog. To paraphrase you don't need a F250, with or with truck nuts, to pull your John boat, but it sure is nice when pulling your big camper. They can do the work, just takes more effort on their part.
I'm very familiar with a 38 lb male, David Lambert's Boudreaux, that is HRCH, UH, SMR, WX titled. He has successfully run Super Retriever Series and passed. Also a 30 lbs female in Tallahassee that in her first 2 years of hunting has retrieved over 2700+ birds from geese in Canada to dove in Florida.
Guess I saying as a few other have mentioned, I am somewhat concerned about the breed getting bigger over the years.

I want a Boykin BAD...I tried to talk the wife and daughter into one last spring but they insisted on a "rescue" dog...great little pooch but it has the bird sense of a cinder block.
I have been a lab person for the last 45 years but I have always admired the Boykins drive. How are they around families? Lots of spaniels tend to be one person dogs and won't tolerate much attention from anyone other than that one person...and many are downright hostile about it, especially with kids. It is hard to tell with Boykins in the field because any gun dog worth its kibble is focused on the task at hand when in the field so their personality seems obsessed and not "friendly". I don't care if it eats up strangers when they come on the place...it'll keep strangers off the place....but I can't have a dog around that shows contempt for anyone in the immediate family and I have been around spaniels that did. My daughter got bitten by a friends cocker once...not a field dog...and she doesn't want any part of any dog that looks similar but I want a Boykin dammit!

damn that's a pretty dog!!!
I have only been around other people's Boykins hunting so I am no expert but I have never seen them unable to do what was asked of them. My Lab weighs about 78 pounds...she is a big girl...English lab. She is a go getter but I worry about her weight and joints....I won't kennel her, for example, in my 3500 truck because the tailgate is about 42 inches high...she can do it but I won't let her. I have a box I have built so she doesn't have to make that jump so often but that means I have to haul the box around. I am going to buy a lay 90's suburban 2500 for this very reason but I still worry about her weight and joints....she makes water entries like one of those dogs on ESPN....beautiful to behold but it ain't good for her at her size...I had a Lab once that slid in the water like an otter...friends gave me fits about it but I never worried about that one hurting itself jumping out of a boat...my current lab shoots out of the boat blind like she is shot out of a cannon and sounds like a cannon shot hitting the water....it can't be healthy LOL....its impressive but at what cost?
I also worry about a Boykins ability to bust cover. A heavy lab can bull through about anything....I have seen Boykins do it on pure drive alone but I always wonder if they can keep it up as they age.....

Mine made 1 years old today. Big handful. Had labs all my life and this little dog is unreal with energy. There isn't a bird around here safe from her from day light to dark. She is on the small size, about 23lbs last check, but still filling out.
No problem here. To get someone's attention, she will run up to them and squirm on the ground all around them.

I’m definitely in the field for a Boykin. Due to your location this would be very convenient for me. Any way you could go into detail or possibly post a pic of the nutts on the male?
