Let me know. So far I'm leaning towards bu Yah after talking to people, but we'll see after I meet with him. I'm still open to suggestions.

Actually, just about every trainer mentioned here is registered for the HT in Shreveport.

but don't expect to find trainers mentioned here

I've been training my own retrievers since 1984, mostly Labs and Goldens, including several All Age field trial dogs, Master Hunters, and Grand dogs. I also judge field trials and HRC events.
I run more field trials than hunt tests these days, but I'm starting to get back into HRC tests as my older dog can't handle the rigors of All Age work.
J.D. Babb (Bu-Yah!) and Chuck McCall (ChuMac) have both run under my judgement many times and I have good things to say about their dogs I've judged. Both are very professional and I always enjoy watching their dogs, win or lose, pass or fail.
Ricky Elston (Southern Tide) is also a very good trainer in the Mandeville area. Likewise Ed Thibodeaux (Satin Belle) in the Morse/Gueydan area. Both are also very good trainers.
Bart Posey, to my knowledge, generally trains hunt test and gun dogs. He is in Carrier, Ms. He's also a capable trainer.
If I didn't train my own dogs, in the Baton Rouge area, I'd send mine to either Chuck or J.D. . It's a toss-up, but Chuck gets the nod if you have Grand aspirations. J.D gets the nod if you might want to dabble a little in the FT minor stakes. Either will do you right.
Some people shy away from the dog games, when they just want a "hunting dog", but I think there is value in proper training and running tests. It exposes the dog to hunting concepts all year long, and can be a lot of fun to develop a good dog to enhance your hunting.

Left the ht arena in 2005, got worn out on the politics of the local clubs. Developed a following for gun dogs and disliked spending weekends sitting on tailgates hurrying up to wait. Tried to dabble in ft but was difficult since my dog always came last or not at all in the set ups. Not to mention, water without teeth is non-existent west of Baton Rouge that is technical enough for real dogs. I am sure we know one another, i know who cat squirrel is.

I know Brian Johnson of Winnie and Eric Chauvin of lake Charles and both are excellent. Hunted one of Brian's dogs this winter. I know a high school kid training that only does two or three dogs at a time that is really good at starting dogs. I am using one of his dogs now and love him. Dog is not force fetched and not the best with hand signals but I would not trade him for a fancy trained dog for anything. And he is cheap and fast.

Cheap and Fast doesn't not get a dog trained. One or those two can train a dog and he's not a preacher. You might need to get out more and see some real dogs work.
My buddy had a chocolate named Maya, he's out of the game for good now but driving his wife to akc show events in their motorhome

My son has a 15 week old lab I bought him. He's teaching basic commands now and doing well. Should I spend the money on a trainor or try ourselves?

How much time dedication and maturity does you or your son have for training the pup.
If you can dedicate thirty minutes to training 4-5 days a week I think that you will be pleasantly surprised with the outcome even as an amateur.
Buttt! Get training videos. And seek help on forums like retriever training forum
Bill hillman puppy training was absolutely amazing. Once my pup hit 6months I switched over to mike Larry’s TRT.
Bill hillman was about $100 but you can very easily find people selling used versions on retrieve training forum.
Lardy is a little harder to find used and is a bit more expensive but get TRT and his collar conditioning video.
All of the training materials(videos, bumpers, 30ft leads, pinch collars, Garmin sport pro 2 ecollar) will coat about one what the first month of training would normally cost ($600-$800)
It’s rewarding and sometimes nerve racking when your nervous your pup isn’t picking something up but it’s absolutely awesome when it clicks the very next day.
I would say if yo are just hunting with the pup and not trying to win field trials self trained all the way.
If you are trying to seriously compete in trials I would say that’s damn near impossible as a newbie but you gotta start somewhere

Building a dog is similar to building a hot rod, all you have in the beginning is a bunch of parts that need to fit in sequence or the finished product will be chit. Total Retriever Training by Lardy should be ordered first, find someone local that will agree to mentor you and your son through the tough spots. Force Fetch and Force to Pile are the only areas that you will need hands on explanations (visually watching the sequence will help immeasurably). If this doesn’t work, get with a Good Pro and get three months of early basics (Force Fetch, obiedence, simple Marks & collar conditioning). Not sure where you’re located but; Chuck McCall BR, Mark Smith southshore, Ricky Elston northshore, Ed T Laffy.

Awesome, thanks! We just want him to hunt and be a happy dog. My son loves to fish and I'm currently working on fixing up a big John boat for him. He just turned 15 and it will be a boat to fish and hunt out of. The pup is so fun right now. Well behaved and trains well. He did shite in the house today though cause the rain was so bad. I agreed with him, I w ouldnt go out either
