I agree but that's the word on the street for this size tohatsu
I asked a guy that replaced a 50 Mega with one and said he lost maybe 1 or 2 mph

get four stroke , most small mercury engines are tahatsu motors , get it use and do not be afraid of it had one for 15 years

Leaning toward the 2 stroke for better power and hole shot.
4 stroke beats it on both counts.

Thanks CHEDBALLZ,
I called Duvic's in Harvey and was quoted about $6k installed for the 50 hp.

Three dealer mechanics say different.

Greenhead22, Sorry you got some bad info about the 40/50 running lean with a restrictor pull. There is only one setting for the injectors and it isn't flashable. They the ecu is set for the 50hp motor and only an orifice plate on the air restricts it to 40hp. Actually if you wanted to argue would make it run a touch on the rich side at 40hp. but not enough either way over 10hp with that much displacement to make a noticeable burn difference on a plug after 10 hrs. just fyi

What about the 50 4 stroke outperforming the 2 stroke?
Posted on 6/1/17 at 2:34 pm to GREENHEAD22
The are neck and neck, its all about the boat and setup for each application. If the same boat was involved and both motors were forced to run the same prop it may go either way depending on the prop in the setup. I have seen a 4 stroke 40/50 hit low 50's in a 660 ft race..... the TLDI will do the same with a different setup and twice the gas consumption.

The 4 stroke walks off and leaves 2 stroke. The biggest consideration used to be MPG and weight. 2 stroke weighs 205.7 and 4 stroke weighs 209. My decision was solely based on which one was less thirsty.

How about this for a bump....
So I was trying to find some reading on the removal of the restrictor plate on the Tohatsu motors and the effects on the motor long term, and this thread popped up on my google. I see Boat Motor Bandit mentioned it on the 2-strokes, but what about on the 4-strokes? I just got a new 40HP Tohatsu, and the dealer who sold it to me removed the restrictor plate when he mounted it on my boat. I assume this will have to long term negative effects on the motor since the dealer did it himself (without me even requesting it, because I didn't know it was an option ). Is there anything I should be worried about? Supposedly its now running 48HP without the restrictor plate.

Lake Area? Aren't some dealers authorized to remove the plate and it doesn't void the warranty?
Those motors are freaking sweet.

Get the 50 4 stroke. No advantage of having the 2 stroke as far as power, etc. per my dealer. This thing sips gas and pushes my 17/56 Havoc like a dream.
$ strokes are quitter and easier to crank in sub freezing weather but I don't know about their durability....a 2 stroke can be treated horribly and as long as you get the mixture right they'll last forever. 4 strokes I ain't so sure of.
The one thing I know for a fact is they are gas sipping machines! I had a 26 foot center console with twin 250 2 stroke evinrudes and it would scare you at the fuel pump. I repowered that hull with twin 250 Yamaha 4 strokes and I could go to the Bahamas and back for about $200 comfortably. The evinrudes would require fuel in Florida and in the Bahamas...about $400 worth. Probably not an issue with a 50HP but anything above a 115 and the difference in fuel consumption is a real consideration...

I just called Lake Area and spoke to the service department, and they told me that them removing the restrictor plate doesn't void any type of warranties.

Lake Area Marine.
Man don’t let the cat out of the bag keep it on the down low man. Lol!
Love my Tohatsu’s that I bought from Kyle.
Probably eyeing another Alweld for Laccasine and other hp restricted water. Waiting until the restrictions lift to pull the trigger as I sold my smaller rig.
