Trying to decide between a 2 stroke or 4 stroke, will be going on the back of a 17ft side console.
Leaning toward the 2 stroke for better power and hole shot.

Great outboards. Buddy who I fish with has a ten year old Tohatsu 40 hp two stroke and it just flat out works. Never an issue.

the new 40/50 4 stroke tohatsu's are out performing the TLDI 2 strokes that are left on the market. By the 40hp and remove the restrictor plate on the air compressor, drop a turbo hot shot or a YBS prop on that beast and let it eat. on a 1652 weldbilt he can hit 51 and 52 mph stripped down and 47 to 48 loaded.

I have one. Great engine, very light on gas.

2 stroke
Make sure to post pics. I'm interested in seeing it on the boat

Get the 50 4 stroke. No advantage of having the 2 stroke as far as power, etc. per my dealer. This thing sips gas and pushes my 17/56 Havoc like a dream.

My cousin still has an early 90's 25 hp. That son of a gun still runs like a scalded dog.
It's got a weird ring to it, almost like there is a bell inside the cowling , but it has always done that. I'm not knocking it, they were great motors. I can't say I have any experience around a newer one.
Eta: His is on a 1652 alumaweld. It flies with the 25.

How much did the motor cost you, if you don't mine me asking?

Off the top of my head, not real sure. I'll check when I get home what the exact price was. Have been happy so far

After talking to some mechanics and doing a little research I am going with the 2 stroke.
Taking off the restrictor plate voids the warranty and forces the engine to run lean and have issues. You have to reprogram the injectors in order for it to run correctly.

Nice rig mach. I know those Havoc boats are really popular up in North Louisiana and Arkansas.
Don't see too many here in South Louisiana

20 years ago, it was nothing but War Eagles. Now it's mostly Havoc with an occasional Excel, Edge, or Ambush. Had to go with what's in mane!

I know someone who recommends them and I don't believe a word he says about anything. Yamaha

As long as it's fuel injection and not carburated, you're good. Thank goodness they're doing away with carburators now. That's a never ending battle on an outboard

I have a 92 model 50 2 stroke (don't think tohatsu made 4s then). Recently had issues (last 2 years or so). Frankly, I treat it like crap and it gave me over 10 years of worry free service, so I think highly of them.
I would go with a 4 stroke now days. The biggest issues I had with them past was power to weight. Think that's not nearly the issue it was. And they are so much quieter.
