Unfamiliar area to me. Actually, haven't fished saltwater since southern California 30 years ago.

Have a charter booked for Tuesday, bay and jetty trip. Chance of rain, but wind is supposed to be not bad and shifted from a southwest to southeast wind, which I understand means better fishing, and timing is perfect with new moon phase.

Anyone familiar with the area that can give some insight on what one might reasonably expect in these current conditions?

TIA

Went to Galveston several years ago and locals were catching channel mullet and redfish off the beach on dead shrimp.

You fishing the jetty. Always a chance at some big trout. If nothing else you will mop up on sheepshead out there

bay and jetty trip

You will probably start off in Galveston Bay (depending on where you launch) for probably trout and then run to the jetties and fish for anything that bites (most likely Reds or sharks). I fish East Bay mostly which is the most Eastern bay of the Galveston Bay complex which makes up Galveston Bay, Trinity Bay, and East Bay.

Assume you might be throwing lures/soft plastic in the bay but will end up with live shrimp at the jetty. trip this time of year can be good for trout in the 1-3 pound range. Could be some larger trout mixed in but a 5 pound trout at the jetties this time of year is pretty big. Probably catch some reds if the charter knows where to target them at the jetties. If the wind is reasonable for a few days you can have visibility of 5-6+ feet or more out past the boat cut on the North Jetty. South jetty the water will be just as nice. Get that kind of clean water and you will get into Spanish Macks or spooled by big jacks running the bait along the jetty. Real clean water and it being hot as hell go hand in hand out there this time of year.

Thanks for the replies

Just really don't know anything about the area and I know many of the good people on the OB do.

Charter service says they specialize in specks and reds, but also heavily target sheepshead and even big black drum on the bay and jetty trips. Fact is, I've never caught a single fish from the gulf, so I'll probably be thrilled just catching a mullet or a hardhead

Caught bonito, mackerel and barracuda on the west coast when I was a kid, but that's the last saltwater action I've seen. Pretty excited about this trip.

I fish the crystal beach side (just across the bay on ferry). If you interested in spots on that side I can give you a few sure fire spots. Got into croaker, reds, few specks last week wading in Galveston bay.

Hit the jetties today.

Sheepshead, puppy drum (black), specs

Rain ran us off to the Yacht Basin Grill for two hours of fried shite and beer.

Went back and tied into a few.

Fun but I’m tired as shite.

I'm looking to book a charter as well. If your guy does well, please pass along a recommendation. I've been looking at fly fishing charters in Galveston for a trip in a couple of weeks.

Not sure if this service does fly fishing, but I will ask... and I'll bump the thread with a response if they do, and they produce for us
