You need to plant them around the middle of August to have them ready by Halloween.

Is this legit? I, too, like OY would like to plant some after I harvest my corn. Can you plant in late June/July? Or is august the best time in area as described in OP?

Days to maturity can run 90-140 days or so depending on variety. Choose your variety...check days to maturity and do the math.

Always plant them first week of July for late October Pumpkins. I think the ole saying was independence day (July 4th) would yield for Halloween (Oct. 31) We tend to Plant Last week of June in SWLA

I just picked up a variety of seeds the other day to plant. All the research I've done is saying 90-120 days for maturity. Personally I'd prefer mine to be ready a few weeks before Halloween. Looking forward to the sweet/pie pumpkins for beer!

Pumpkins are greedy eaters, and need lots of food while they grow. I plan on mixing in manure/compost into the dirt when I till. I think there's several ways to do it, but a popular way is making a mound and placing around 4-5 seeds an inch or so deep. It's my first year doing it as well, but I've grown squash, so this can't be that difficult.

Lol Yeah I don't think it's much harder. I would mix in manure with the soil, then once they sprout a little, I'd probably fertilize with miracle grow shake and feed or some other sort of fertilizer for veggies. I read this article the other day that may be helpful.

Plant the seed 1/2 inch deep end of July and forget it. They are no maintenance. I've never fertilized mine, and they do fine. Wife likes to put pinestraw under the pumpkins to keep them off the wet ground, but even that is not necessary. Just be aware, if you have deer in the area, they will wipe you out. They got me last year. They ate the skin and all when they were a bit bigger than softballs. The only trace of any pumpkins was a few seed where they once were.
