Spawned by the "is it safe in to run a 14 foot flat boat in the MS River" thread.

I had never seen this phenom before, but about a month ago, I was in a 23 foot bay boat, fishing at the mouth of some little bayou that flowed into Chef Pass.

Huge arse barge comes by, and it's wake starts sucking the water out of the little bayou, which immediately made our boat start drifting toward the marsh. Then, the water comes back in, which "raises" the boat, and pretty much almost "threw" the boat into the marsh.

It was actually kinda scary. We managed to get out of there in time, but I'd never seen that before.

Anyone actually get beached doing by this kind of deal ever?

Many times while fishing Hopedale and a ocean tanker 1-2 miles away passes. What was 3ft of water in the marsh, ended up sitting on the bottom until the water flowed back in

Yep. Calcasieu ship channel when an LNG tanker came by. Coast Guard forced us up against the levee. Tanker sucked all the water...left us on a mud flat. Water came back after he passed...mud suction almost almost caused us to fill up with water. Kinda scary..kinda cool. Wouldn't want to do it again though. But when we "popped" loose from the suction...it was a ride!
