Anyone ever built their own crawfish pond? Know someone that has? Say 1 acre?

I've apparently got some really good clay filled soil around my house because the crawfish go nuts every year. So I'm wondering if I dug say 4" of top soil out of an acre, and used the dirt as levees, if I would have all the crawfish I wanted? Seems like having a pump to keep water in it would be the toughest part. And I'd need to plant some kind of food source.

Anyone ever see this done?

Gotta be deeper than 4" I would think. I know with the levees it would be deeper but still seems like it would be too shallow.

Best bet IMO is to go talk to some crawfish pond owners about it if you know any.
The ones I've been in we're 2-4' deep iiRC

I have wanted to, mostly to duck hunt over it though

I think the water pumps would be the biggest problem, bc some parts of the year you need to lower the water to allow for the vegetation to grow to offer better food sources.

Definitely need a water pump and a canal or bayou nearby to pump it to and from.

And if this is close to your house, there will be plenty of snakes. Something to think about.

You would need a tractor to plant and run a pto pump ideally I would think. Also like mentioned a water source. this makes crawfish look cheap

Yep, I think I'll pass. Only way I could do it would be to use well water, no holding canals around here, so I'm out. The whole snake thing didn't help either.

If I ever own a big piece of hunting land I'd like to do one for ducks. And maybe a deep pond or two for bass.

I have a 4 acre pond. Trying to make up my mind whether I want to spend the money on a well to keep it full all year. The previous owner raised catfish in it until electricity and feed got so high.

Could you just like line the bottom with clay or something?

We have two 40 acre ponds and I can tell you this, it ain't cheap. You will have to get it precision leveled in order for the water to flood and drain evenly. A well will cost in the 15-20k range assuming you want to go electric and a power source is close. As you mentioned you will have to plant some type of vegetation, rice is so common because of the fact the stalk is very hardy, crawfish way the algae and other shite that grows on the stalk. Lastly is traps, they run about 7-8 bucks a piece. With all that said go buy you a sack when you want some.

I bought the place last year. It has good dirt in it. I am waiting to see how it holds water this year. With the drought last year, probably not a good guage on how it holds water. Already have a 4 inch well, just need the submersible pump. If anything, probably just make a fish pond for my 3 grandsons and family.

I'd like to have a family pond somewhere. I'm definitely digging one if I ever buy a piece of land for hunting. If the lease we have now had a pond on it that actually held water I'd be stocking the hell out of it.
