Am thinking about replacing older spool bearings in my 10+ year old Shimano Calcuttas with ceramic bearings from Boca Bearings. Cost is $40/pair. Anybody try this out? Is it worth it? Greater casting range, smooth, etc. I also saw ceramic bearings from Hong Kong on eBay, but figure will try US made first in case I need to return. Thoughts?

If you backlash now, you're not going to enjoy them.

I have them on a couple reels, you can cast a long way with them, but you can create some serious professional overruns. I got something in one and its loud as hell, but still casts like a champ.

They're worth it imo, I have them in all of the reels we use regularly. They hold up longer and cast further, they are louder especially if you get the unshielded version, be sure to plan on adjusting the spool breaks or you'll have the backlashes issues mentioned above.

They definitely make a difference. I've put them in both Citicas and curados. They will throw a mile and smooth as silk.

Have any of you tried the cheap ones from ebay ? I am probably gonna supertune and change bearings in my reels, but no way I'm spending 500.00 for bearings (I have 20 reels now).

I did a supertune and used the eBay bearings in a Curado 201E7 I have. The supertune made a noticeable difference but I wish I'd have just spend the extra money on a quality set of bearings. Those cheaper bearings didn't seem to perform much better than the factory installed bearings.

Y'all just missed Boca's annual Black Friday sale, they honor it the whole weekend following it and it's 35% off you total order, I load up during it every year. We fish saltwater and wade pretty much exclusively so I'm weary of trying the cheap ones more than would be fishing out of the boat in freshwater.

Wish I had known. I took apart a Pro Qualifier I bought back in April 2 nights ago and the factory bearings barely spin. I assume they are full of grease. Whatever I buy I want the removable shields so I can clean and lube them easily. I don't tournament fish anymore and have lots of time to tinker with them. This is all new to me but I figure it's another skill to have even if I can't work anymore.

I might take that offer and supertune my 201E7 and 51MG. I have eBay bearing sitting aside for both but haven't installed them because I wasn't completely happy with the eBay bearings on a 200E7 that I installed and eBayed.
