What kind of feed do you use? And what do you use for nesting boxes?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Usually throw some crushed oyster shells or pork bones in w the feed. Helps with the egg shells, from what I was told.

I used to........used layena. Loved having them, though they were messy as hell in an urban environment. I could never figure out how to get them to stop shatting on my porch and I pretty much tried everything.

I just use whatever laying pellets they have at the co-op or tractor supply. You can also crush up eggshells and feed it back to them to help keep their shells hard. And I just built some 1'x1' boxes in the coup for eggs. The funny thing is, I have 4 nests and 5 hens. They almost always lay in the same nest. Sometimes 2 hens will get in at the same time.

Layer pellets and corn (the extra corn will get you the really orange yolks). We do half and half.
A hen will lay in anything, buckets, boxes, a corner of a room. Any place she feels that her eggs are hidden. A five gallon bucket with a large enough hole in the side works well.
What breeds do you have?

I built a catawba coop. They laid on the top layer. Fed them table scraps and Layena.

feed some mixture of laying pellets and corn chops, vary that mixture by season....

I've got 5 young hens at the moment and feeding them chick starter. The bag says from hatch to lay. Once they start laying I'll feed frushed oyster shells and rice/seed?/corn mix. I've been wondering about the nesting myself but decided on 1x1ply boxes. I've got a mobile coupe so it'll be a challenge to mount secure on the chain link dog kennel that they're in... Lol

I feed Layena pellets, and offer crushed oyster shells to help w the eggshells. Built nesting boxes out of wood, and added a back hatch so wife can get the eggs without going through the coop.
My dad uses milk crates for his laying boxes, and they work just fine.

Those eggs are going to come out regardless of a nesting box or not. Throw a little hay on the ground and put some apple cider vinegar in their drinking water.

True, but I'd rather collect eggs out of an easily accessible box compared to scattered about the coop.

actually don't have them yet. I'm going up to Zachary this weekend and get some pullets. What breed would you recommend for laying hens?

Conditioner from the feed store. Basically assorted pellets.

My dad is a Chicken Whisperer. He uses crack corn and laying pellets. Also, he throws anything in there...watermelon rinds, the first couple layers of cabbage/lettuce, satsumas/oranges/tomatoes that fall, anything that you peel off of fruits/vegetables and throw away, leftovers out of the fridge, etc.
They are pretty much a land crab and eat anything.
