I'm heading down there with a group of guys to fish on Saturday, wondered if anyone had been lately and what we might should expect. Reading over past fishing reports online, it looks like this time of year is less quantity more quality fish. I've never targeted Tuna though and have only caught blackfin in Florida, so I'm not entirely sure what I'm getting into- but I'm expecting an arse whipping

Better hope that forecast slacks off a little, looks like it's going to be a rough one

correct. I assume yall will be fishing the lump. You are targeting monsters. You won't be catching a pile of peanuts like the summer time.

We were just hoping for no rain or freezing temps. I fish offshore a lot so 2-3 foot seas doesn't really bother me, and a guy going with us used to fish in the Bering Sea. The other 4 are landlocked, so I'm expecting some vomit

Think lump has been pretty shitty lately. Too many sharks. Seems like swordfish have been chewing lately. Been a few big ones caught past few days.

Tuna seems kind of hit or miss from what I’ve seen. Mainly bc sharks I guess. Some ppl crushing em, others just pulling up half eaten fish.

If that forecast doesn't improve alot I suspect y'all wont be leaving the dock. Calling for 5 footers at 5 seconds right now.

That’s at midnight. Looks like it calms down to like 3ft by end of the day. Still not calm but a little more doable. Might just get a late start.

That’s all based on forecast tho. And it’s not like those are always right

Yea we're hoping to get a clearer picture by Thursday and make a call at that point. We booked boat and lodging through mexican gulf, so we'll be able to reschedule both is necessary, was just looking forward to the trip. I've got no desire to hop on a 42' boat in 5-7's though

It's not looking any better according to Windfinder. Now showing 7 ft @ 6 seconds at 6am. I hope yall get to go and kill some fish but it don't look good. If you have to rebbok I would see if they have anything open in 4-5 weeks. Big tuna should be on the lump by then with any luck.

ETA: CP3 is right, it's just a forecast. They get it right as often as Punxsutawney Phil

CP3 Question:When do Y'all start consistently checking the lump for Tuna?

I caught a 160lb one at the lump like 4 weeks ago

There were literally 100s of fish over 150lbs jumping 15ft out of the water blowing up on flying fish. It was hands down one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.

So to answer your question, pretty much as early as first week of January. Maybe even late December. The lump is finicky though. They could be doing it to it one day and gone the next. Or sharks move in.

That's an understatement. I don't miss the days of 30 ft of anchor chain, 600 ft of rope, and 100 lbs of pogies.

Plenty of tuna are caught in open water this time of year, bait is always key.

Awesome pic CP3, looking at that pic it looks like yall earned it that day. Looks bumpy to say the least.

Is the Cognac platform a good reference point on Windfinder for the lump?

Use Main Pass 289c for E Lump forecast on Windfinder. It’s right by the lump.

Sunday actually doesn’t look too bad though as of now.

We haven’t heard anything from our captain yet. The prospect of fishing in rolling 6-7s with occasional 9s just sounds awful though. Will they even go out in that?

5-6ft I doubt it. If they’re spaced out like 6-7 seconds it’s not THAT terrible (You won’t die or anything), but 5-6ft @ 4 seconds you prob not going. I’ve been out in those conditions a few times and while I wasn’t worried about dying, I also wouldn’t leave the dock if I knew it would be that rough. My limit is typically 2-4ft forecast.

Who is your captain?
