It's all about playing the odds. 99% of deer shot broad side from a stable shoothouse are dead within 60 yards, whether with a ballistic tip, bonded bullet, or unicorn terd. Still, there's always that potential you frick up, or the conditions aren't perfect. Where I'm at I have to make quick decisions and often shoot unsupported. IF I make a bad shot, I want it to bleed out both sides. Bottom line, I don't believe a ballistic tip gives me enough of an increase in lethality to offset the potential for no blood trail. That, and I just disagree in general that exit wounds don't make the difference in a blood trail, but that's the kind of thing people are going to trust anecdotal experience with so it's really not worth a drawn out back and forth.

Maybe you hit a horn and stunned him, highly unlikely.

I shot a 270 one year and had 2 deer run off without bleeding at all, found them both eventually.
