I wouldn’t get the ruger in 350 legend. The scout will be a legal primitive weapon for most states in the south with that cartridge, have a couple and they are great guns. As others have mentioned the barrel is made by Bergara and the trigger is excellent.

The ruger American gen2 in 7mm-08 would be a gun that he could use forever and would be a good choice as well. There’s just no good reason to get a straight walled cartridge in a bolt action.

CVA is a great rifle. It depends on what caliber you choose.
Those crack barrel single shot rifles kick like hell in larger calibers.

I have the muzzle brake on my 35 Whelen CVA Scout 2 and it kicks about the same as my 270. I sometimes bring it out instead of my other rifles.

Have one in 35 Whelen . Never hit a deer that didn't go down. Would probably kill an elephant .

My favorite rifle to hunt with. Have it in 35 Whelen in Stainless. Put a Leupold on it and its a deer killing machine.

ETA: I have a muzzle break on mine and the recoil is minimum.

I have a 7mm-08 Scout. It shoots good, light, compact, easy carrying. Get the scout and spend a lil extra on glass.

I’m 57 and just got my first CVA in 35 Whelan. I’m now using it all season long…the ballistics aren’t that different from the 308 I’ve always used, and I can use it during the primitive weapon weeks of season. Get one in SS with muzzle brake, use $$ left in budget for a nice scope, and your son may not ever need a new rifle for deer.

those are my thoughts exactly. The fact that they consider it a "primitive" weapon is laughable, but I'm not complaining

Primitive weapons seasons have never really been about making the weapon less effective. They were lobbied for in the 70s by the makers of black powder rifles as a win-win for them and the state wildlife agencies. When you buy another type of gun, ammo for it, etc. you’re paying excise taxes that go specifically to fund green jeans, plus they usually get to sell you another license. So long as it prevents you from using your handed down 30-06, they could give a shite if the weapon you’re using is actually as good or even better. Same with the eventual removal of restrictions on crossbows during archery.

I have zero experience with the Scout. But earlier today I saw a guy on another site saying his would lightly dimple the primer of the bullet in the chamber when closing the action. Last I checked, no one else had chimed in with the same issue.

I bought a 35 Whelen several months ago. I was torn between 35 Whelen and the 350 Legend and went with the Whelen. Recoil isn’t that bad due to the muzzle brake.

I’ve taken it to the range a couple times and it shoots a pretty tight group with 180gr Barnes. I’m taking it to the woods this weekend hopefully will bust the hell out of a buck.

For those with a 35 Whelen that 180 Barnes- how does it perform with a shoulder shot? I like dropping them on the spot.

I have a 7mm-08 and I found that when sighting it in at the range with the hand guard in a sand bag, vs my son shooting it in a deer stand with the barrel (in front of the hand guard) resting on the window, that it had a wildly different and erratic point of impact. Not rocket science, it should do that, but it was a learning experience with a 10pt on the line.

Have you tried a Bog Deathgrip for your son? I have one and love it.

I have the rifle ready to go pointed down the shooting lane.

The boy is 18 now and has given up on guns all together. If he’s hunting, it’s with a bow only.
