Ammo: Inventories Look Caught Up, But Will Price Ever Drop?

Seems like every site now has plenty of stock of most rounds, plus bulk. It seems inventories at retailers are back also. Still finding it difficult to find some things like .32 Auto or .458 SOCOM, but it hey have all mainline calibers.
The question is the price. I’m seeing most 9mm for around $0.32-38 a round, before shipping and 5.56 still above $0.60. Will the prices ever get back to anywhere close to where they were a couple years ago or is the new price because of inflation and cost of raw materials, or is it because of opportunity and knowing people will pay it?

Inventories caught up, but inflation did too.

You do know there is another part of that equation?

I think prices settle a good bit more, but inflation has certainly sunk its teeth in things.
I still think we get back to 25 cent 9mm brass range ammo. I’d call that a success
ETA: you’ve got gun stored still living 6 months in the past with prices. The buy everything mentality will always have a limited appetite in my opinion

The bad part of a lot of these companies moving out of blue states and the lack of unions forcing the companies to make more product than they can sell will help keep the prices higher

The ammo companies have figured out that they can continue to sell at these prices, so why change?
Just wait until the pistol brace and 80% ban is announced in 3 weeks. Prices will Spike again until late summer, then the mid-terms will cause another spike beginning around October.
If you want to buy ammo, now is the time to do it. Even if we get a Red wave in November, inflation has still fukked everything. Go look at how much the price of brass and shipping has gone up in the last 12 months. Until those costs go back to 2019 levels (which honestly may never happen again) you're never going to see 35 cpr for 556/223 again and 15 cpr for 9mm.
Yourr basically going to settle for 55-60 cpr for 556 and 35-40 cpr for 9mm as good prices.
I went into a big box store today and the shelves were slammed with rounds, but no one is going to buy Winchester 556 for 72cpr as they had it priced.
It's a shite show and will continue to be.

Yes, when everyone’s inventory is flush, capitalism will drive prices down.

Yes, supply was covered by the OP. There is still strong demand, hence prices aren't coming down much if at all.

There may be ammo available, but people are still buying in volume at the higher prices.
9mm brass-cased FMJ from name brands used to sell as low as $8-9 a box on the regular, now people are scooping up no-name stuff for over $15. And remember, brands used to be important, it's a matter of trust that it would run consistently.
Hell, steel-cased 9mm still goes for $15 and it moves.
If I'm selling the stuff, why should I cut my profits?

I saw a case of black cloud locally that was 12 gauge in BBB for like $260 nuts. But I did notice that when I was in Shreveport and went to Academy for something else and browsed the ammo isle it looked back to normal-ish but prices were high. They still had the 4 box limit up. I used to grab the brass Academy brand (Monarch maybe) .223 just for plinking and it was a box of 20 for $4 out the door, and those are now $12 something iIRC.

I’m looking for 7mm STW. That will NOT cost my first born!

I'm looking for 6mm Remington and have been for a year. Nobody has it, I even tried ordering from Remington directly.

As long as we are willing to pay those prices, they will remain that high. It’s basic economics.

No drop in velocity = no drop in prices.

Well, if there weren’t competition, this would be true. There will be a point where someone WILL start dropping prices to steal thy neighbor’s revenue.

I need 140/142 grain Hornady match ammo in 6.5 Creedmoor. My Berger bullets wont arrive until August. No reloading until then.

I can only order locally, can't have ammo flown in.
So my options are very limited and expensive. Very little on shelves.
