My problem is that I opened my big damn mouth and told the wife that I would'nt buy another gun unless I sold one I already have.
I like all of mine too much as it is and was wanting to build an AR.

Might try to sweet talk her a bit

Always go with 5.56 NATO over .223 remington. While they are close to the same size, with a 5.56 NATO chambered rifle you can still shoot .223 but with a .223 chambered rifle you can't shoot 5.56 NATO which is significantly more common than the .223 counterpart.

What tools are required to complete the lower?
Depends on how far you want go. I got a barrel wrench, stock wrench, snap ring pliers. I think that's it, but I'm hungover and it's been a while since I built mine.

Also i think it would be a bit weird to fill out paper work and have a background check done and only walk out of the gun shop with a stripped lower receiver
Nahh, it's the seed!

Rock River has a great sale going on right now for a pretty tricked out rifle for 1,000. check out their website for details

that they do. I bought one at Jim's during the tax free weekend about a month ago. There are easily 400 dollars worth of extras on that gun. Just the two-stage match trigger and chrome-lined and ported bolt are probably 300 bucks.

That being said, I would most likely buy a piston action AR and not a gas impingement AR if buying an AR at this point.

Im not eve going to read what the other people put in their responses. Just list to me. I have had a few. shot many different brands. Ran 3 gun competitions with some and have what i think to be my best, lightest, and least expensive set up yet.

1.Stag arms lower
2.Stag arms upper with bolt and all except rail.'
3.shaved down front post sight on stag for a low profile gas block.
FYI. Stag Arms has the best bolt and receiver and lower for the money. You can buy crome bolts and such for a lot of money but i have never had a jam or missfire with my current set up.
4. Troy ind trx extreme battle rail. not the quad!
5. Magpul front and rear back up flip sights.
6. YHM phantom flash hider
7. Magpul MOE original collapseable stock with rubber butt pad attachment.
8. ergo grip.
9. what ever light weight optic red dot you prefer.

10. lights, bipods, lasers, magnifiers for red dots, scopes, forward grips, and 100 other things can be put on, but weigh it down so much. and are only needed for certian missions or whatever. Bull barrells are over rated in my opinion. if you need one for purposes of over heating you may want to rethink your strategy and just blow up the building instead of going in.

go with that setup for under 1500.00 or 1800.00 give or take and you will have a sweet rifle for not the cost of those 3500 to 4500 competition guns.

WHY: this is light weigh, simple, accurate, fun, good looking!, and has everything you need to be successful in competition or war.

You can get a piston driven AR from Stag Arms for around 1200.00.

My first AR is a Stag Arms LH model. I love it. Haven't had any problems with it at all.

Mahootney, we must have overwhelmed you. The AR world is one of many many options. Some things are worth paying top dollar for because they are worth it, most of the time people pay top dollar for stuff because a name is on it. very few civilians will ever get to use all the shite they buy for their AR for anything more than a range toy (excluding match barrels, scopes, bipods, mags) despite the fantasies of zombie hordes, katrina part 2 and Armageddon. In which case, the last thing you would want to be doing is standing around in all black with your AR playing army man and probably getting shot by the cops instead of caring for and providing for your family during a traumatic time. but that rant is for another time.

Back to the AR. since this is your first AR go with one of the 2 options i mentioned, get to know the system and you have plenty of time to add the upgrades down the road. Also, remember that you can have many many uppers for 1 lower. The two I mentioned earlier are just as good as Noveske, RRA, Mega, Colt, etc lowers. The only important thing in a lower is fit and finish everything else is buying a rollmark or stylized version. Don't get brainwashed by these brand whores and tactiwannabees, keep it simple at first and then decide later which koolaid your gonna drink.

Yeah. I had to step away from the computer....

This ended up being a very informative thread. Thanks to everyone that contributed.

I'm sure that I wasn't the only one with AR questions. In fact, I had no idea that you could build your own rifle. That's definitely something that I would want to do. I figured that there would be several different opinions, but that's okay. I at least have some quality information to start making my own decisions, and that's an improvement from this morning.

Cheers.

.223 ammo is cheap & you can shoot all day. No, they don't shoot to 600 m, but most of us can't anyway. To get range from a .308, you need a really good sight & know what you're doing. Really, this is a military round because of the range. .308 is also more expensive, & you won't want to shoot 500 rounds anyway due to the kick.

A dot or holo sight on a .223 is a lot of fun out to maybe 150 yards. Honestly, without magnification, I have trouble seeing a man-sized target much further than that. With a scope, a .223 will be more accurate than you out to 250-300 yards.

well said. it should also be boted that if you build one for 500 you can sell for 700-ish. if you buy for 2000 you will lose money on it when you try and sell. I see that all the time.

I myself will be getting an AR soon. I will keep it simple though. None of all that crap attached all over it. Guess that is why I like my AK.

Building an AR for $500 can't cause too much of a backlash in the 504boy household. Just offer to let her go buy some shoes.

Well, i doubt i would build one for that cheap... i tend to take expensive routes. But She was thinking more like 2k... but i didn't go there! You can buy another gun but we can't buy a dining room table!....

If you're slick, you can get some parts at gunshows too. Plus, you can spread it out by what you're working on. Imagine me trying to build mine during the Obama election madness two years ago. It was rough, phone calls, emails, all over, trying to get parts. Ended up with a great build though.
