Guys, every May I go down to Grand Isle and surf fish the incoming tides in the morning and do quite well when the wind cooperates and I can find clean water. However, I've never tried fishing the surf in the evening on a falling tide because I'm usually in my kayak fishing the marsh or
fishing jetties on the bay side of the island.

Have any of you had any luck or any tips to give on evening fishing the surf when the tide is falling?

Also, I generally fish the jetties that start up on the gulf side about half way down the island so I'm not just fishing an open beach. I'm guessing the jetties may hold fish better in the evenings than the open beach would.

Thanks in advance and tight lines!

It is my experience and understanding that the beaches produce for trout because they congregate there for spawning on incoming tides. The incoming tide washes their eggs into the bay. The outgoing tide is not bringing any bait or food to the beach, nor are the fish as prevalent since they are not there to spawn.

I would also expect the pass jetties to produce more on an outgoing tide, fishing the pass side of the jetty or the end of the jetty, not the beach side.

I have caught fish on the breakwater rock jetties across the middle of the island in the summer but there was strong onshore flow from wind and current blowing shrimp up against the rocks. When the shrimp boats are trawling across the beach close in, the shrimp and trout will be at the rocks on the front of the island.

Really good info, I appreciate the response!

In your last paragraph where you say the front of the island, do you mean the Bayside?

No, I am talking about the rock breakwaters off from the beach that start in the middle of the island and extend to the east.

when will you be frying all the fish you're going to catch? Can I bring anything?

Well, I'm not much of a fish frier because I gotta watch my weight but if you don't tell the wifey you can bring a pot and some oil and we can fry up what I don't bring home to her. This is all assuming the nice weather forecasted for next weekend holds. What kind of beer do you drink?

Some of my best surf fishing memories are with the setting sun behind me. In the late evening, I skip the rocks and focus on natural beach, may have to swim to out to the third sandbar (low tide). I then keep moving down current horizontally with the beach. Some times walking up to a mile or two in the water. Casting in three directions - Forward horizontal, to the rigs, and back to the beach. For evenings I like big minnow (mirror lure) baits, fished fast.
