Our 13 yr old rat terrier, blind from birth, wanders away every couple months or so. We live on 5 acres with a river in back, swamp/woods on 2 sides, and a road in front. This dog learned to navigate around our place and could always return to get fed and sleep in the evenings until about 6 mo ago. Looks like her short term memory is fading such that every couple months she has an episode where she can't seem to figure out how to get back to the house. If she stays gone for a night my wife gets distressed (and I).

I would like to buy some kind of transmitter to attach to her collar (the dog!) with some kind of tracking device so we can locate the dog / body when she wanders off in the future. I'm sure it will get worse with time.

Can someone with experience with dog tracking systems recommend something that works? I see systems for 4-5 hundred which I'm OK with, but I want something that works. A half or 1 mile range would be fine.

Look for a used garmin Astro 220 or 320 system. They can be had for 200-350 dollars on coon hunting websites. I think they're about $500 new, which is not a bad price for what you get.

You'll have to take it off of her and charge it every day no matter what you get. Garmin makes an alpha 100 tracking system which is very powerful but will cost about $750 new. It has shock and tone and a range of well over a mile, but that's probably overkill for what you need. You would be paying for a lot of features you'll likely never use with the alpha system.

I would look for a used garmin Astro. You can upload topo maps for about $40 extra and be able to tell exactly what tree your dog is standing by as long as she's in range.

Dogtra makes some lower priced tracking systems, but I have no experience with them. They make work just fine for you. IMO there's three options and what you're willing to pay dictates what you get. The garmin alpha is obviously the best, with the Astro in a close second for your application. I don't have any hands on experience with the dogtra system, but you might want to research it heavily and you may find its perfectly ok for you.

Buy some of those Tile trackers and secure it to the collar. This is a cheap way to do it. I bought a few for my keys wallet and such and I've had good luck finding them with the Tile app

Amazon has them

Much thanks for all the help. I'll look for a used garmin. The dogs neck is less than 3 1/2" diameter so I hope the collar will fit.
