I have a trip Sat, going out about 45 Miles on a 60+ foot boat. I am a freshwater guy. Can a 5 year old(tough 5 year old) Handle this trip. I want him to have fun, and he is pumped to go, but will it be wise?

if he is apt to get the least little bit car sick, then absolutely not.
Rolling seas, diesel fumes and bait can get the strongest of stomachs.

I would think that is a long time to spend on the water with a 5 year old who hasn't been offshore. Wouldn't take a little guy like that very long to dehydrate if he got sea sick.

I wouldn't bring a 5 year old but I've seen them out there.

That's a risk you probably shouldn't take. It might turn him off to fishing all together. Try a short trip first if I were you.

your biggest problem is he is already pumped about going. Its going to be bad if you go without him now.

I think my 4yr old could handle it. We spend alot of time on boats (lakes) and fishing. Obviously off shore is a differnet ball game. I would pack a ton of drinks for him, plenty of gatorade and juice. Give him some dramamine before you go and take Benedryl with you in case he cant handle it, at least he can take a nap.

My 5yo would be on the bow singing "I'm on a Boat" in 5-6' seas and loving every minute of it.

I still remember what the orange juice and pancakes tasted like on my first offshore trip. It was in a boat about that size, and I thought it was the neatest thing ever that there was a kitchen on a boat. I was 6 I think.

I remember the taste so well because I was puking the whole time in a bucket. Looking back on it now, I know my father wishes he would have left me at home.

Take him, good trip or bad trip it's a memory he will never forget. My 6 year old has been exposed to huntin-fishin-campin- everything since he was 3. If he's tough, he'll do fine. If he's not tough, it will be a step in getting him tough. Cheers to a great time

Pack fresh fruit and plenty sun block for the lil one. I also pack penut butter and jelly tortilla roll ups in the ice chest, good snack that will keep him entergized....

Yar, advice needed is advice heeded...

And those born to thee that do not swim,
will be green by morning lights first dim.

No offense but frogging and duck hunting are NOWHERE NEAR the same as an offshore trip.

My kids are older but 2 of them never get sick and one always gets sick. We all went deep sea fishing last year and the one that gets sick took 2 dramamines and never got sick this time. She did have to take a nap and complained about being drowsy but she would do it again, next time with one pill. Definitely dope him up a bit, 1 pill.

You know your boy best... If you think he can handle it he probably can. I don't want to link Facebook, but I have a buddy that takes his two sons offshore for overnighters at least once a year and started when the youngest was 4...

Cole was 8 or 9 in this video....

I agree. I went 110 miles out a month ago in a 29' boat. I regretted not taking the lil one after the trip. In a 60' boat, 40 miles out... It's gonna be a cake walk...

Just trying to share experiences to help the OP make the call.

My first trip was a half day at about 12. Tropical depression. Lost every bit of my Dennys Grand Slam as soon as we stopped and started fishing. Spent the rest of the trip laying in the cabin.

Too late to not take him. You have already gotten him pumped about it. Your trip may be cut short and he may have a blast. I wouldn't say anything about getting sea sick. I would just keep an eye on him. If you talk about getting sea sick then he will be more prone to getting sick. If he don't know what it is he want think about it and actually make himself sick.

Thanks for the input, he has heart set on it but I think I may have been too eager! If I tell him no now it is going to be a shite show, he has been landing and jumping on the back of his toy sharks for a day!!

I say to take him: load him up with bonine starting about 24 hours in advance, give him a small breakfast and make sure he's hydrated. Give him the talk about watching the horizon and such, and tell him if he gets sick he's on his own. If he's tough as you describe, he'll man up and heed your warnings.

But if it's not meant to be, he's gonna chum and be miserable all day. If you can take that, then definitely bring him and a good camera for the memories to be made. I think it's forecasted to be flat on Saturday and with a 60 ft boat, y'all should be fine.
