At Academy for 52.49. Anyone have this or used it? Is it worth the $50? Is it a good setup to learn baitcasting on? I’ve only used spinning.

I can't speak to the combo, but I have a black max reel on a 7' Ugly Stick Lite.

I've used the reel for 5 years now bass fishing and minimal maintenance, and have had no issues. For learning bait casting it would probably be fine. Just start off with the spool tension screw too tight, and back it off as you get more comfortable with the feel. You're going to backlash some but don't let that deter you. Once you get it down, there will only be rare instances where you'll actually prefer a spinning over a bait caster.

We bought two while on vacation about a year ago. I ave worked them in to my rotation, throwing small top water and swim baits

I picked one up from academy earlier this week. It felt pretty good and the price was right. Gonna give it to the old man for Father’s Day. He hasn’t fished in many years so hoping this will get him going again.

I used one up until 3 weeks back.

I’ve brought her back from Grand Isle CPR 3 times. She had caught many o trout in the surf.

3 weeks back, down on Elmers, she fell.
RIP

I’m actually here at Arties now....ol country song playing...I had to tip to the bathroom and look back to a year ago...

There she is....ol tandem beetle. She was light but heavy, ya know.

Just bought 1 Monday to replace a combo that a catfish pulled overboard in the Atchafalaya river. Used it for the 1st time this morning. 7' medium heavy was good action and the reel was a lot smoother than I anticipated. Definitely going to buy a couple more.

They cut that price was $77 couple of weeks ago. Will likely go get it at $50.

For those on a budget, the absolute cheapest best casting reels I’ve bought are “Piscifun” yep, they are Chinese, but you can dial a Piscifun Phantom in so nice that a 6 yr old can’t backlash it.....it has 2 braking systems on it....Guy on YouTube broke it down compared to an Abu and it had better made parts.....

I’ve bought a few Phantoms, and Phantom X models.........honestly great reels.

I bought a few for my nephews a couple of years ago. They've worked well for bass.
