When you were in basic how much time did you spend on gun safety and target practice?

gun safety constantly, you go to multiple different types of ranges for shooting, Its been 20 years since I went to basic though.

A couple of days learning functionality and then zero and qualifying. Big Army taught fear of the rifle (walk like a robot with it pointed downrange at all times, etc).

180 degree opposite once at a rifle platoon.

you got safety instruction, but watching a drill sergeant tear into someone's arse because their weapon wasn't pointed down range was enough for most. you are not even supposed to rotate the selector switch from safe to semi without the range cadre's command. I can't remember how often we were at the range, seemed like a lot.

This will vary by branch of service and most likely year/era in which member attended basic. Also, after basic it will also vary greatly by service, rate/mos, specialty, duty assigned, etc...

BRM was at least 1 full week out of the 8, plus the tactical exercise with blanks, that was another entire course. We also fired machine guns, LAW, etc. (but some of that was in AIT - I was OSUT, so difficult to divide that all out). Conservatively, 70 hours out of ~320 "instructional" hours devoted primarily to, or at least heavily involved with, firearms safety, 22 to 25 percent.

BRM started week two and basically was a part of the training for the duration. Formal training is two weeks but included a day of RBFT and a lot of time seeing how long we could hold the rifle in various ways.

Basic in 76. Two days. First day from 0800-1200 learning the rifle in the classroom. Then hands on un-loaded gun, positions at the range and what not. Second day live fire at all positions taught the day before. Would got marksman if I wouldn't have shot down range at the guys target next to me. That was it. Guess my branch of service?

We had the rifles with us at all times. When we went to the range it was one week of class room instruction, one week of firing. -marines

Aug 27 1967. After that it was all a painful blur. I do remember while adjusting my battle field zero on my trusty M-14 my DI telling me I was using the wrong shoulder to fire my weapon. Being a southpaw I had to fire right handed the rest of the time. Oh yea, he he got my attention by popping me in the helment with his swagger stick. Did any of you do the quick kill with BB guns?

Navy here... We shot one time in boot camp. We shot .22 cal in a 1911 frame.
I was in Combat Systems on the ship and was on the Visit Board Search and Seizure team (VBSS). Regular ships company qualified once a year, We got to shoot like 6 times a year. We qualified on the Berretta 92s, M-14 and 12 gauge pump.
We also got training from former SEALS about clearing spaces and range time that included moving to cover and shooting. Paintball with the SEALS was painful.

Ah 10-4 on that. CG here. Same for us, half a day in the classroom and half on the pistol range. And that was it until I got to my first station. Then twice a year to qualify.
