A lesson on gun safety (NSFW graphic pics)

I didn't bother to check to see if there was a round in the chamber. I pulled the trigger expecting to hear a click and instead got a loud bang. The bullet went into my palm and exited the top of my hand below my little finger. There was not nearly as much pain as you might expect, although that increased significantly once I got to the hospital! I'm waiting to see an orthopedic surgeon to see just how much damage there actually is and what exactly will have to be done. There will be several surgeries, though. Hopefully, I'll get most of the use of my hand back. Unfortunately, the will be no bow season for me and I don't know how much gun season. Fortunately, I'm still here as this could have been MUCH worse! This was a completely preventable accident and I've got no excuse for doing it. I made several mistakes. The first was simply not verifying that the gun was unloaded. This should always be done whether you pick up one of you guns or someone hands you one of theirs. The other was having too many distractions around while doing this. The gun should have had ALL of my attention, not some of it. In the end, I'll recover and hopefully I'll learn from my mistakes. I hope everyone reading this will too. Kevin Brown

Sucks it was a Glock. They fire every time. If it had been a 1911, his chances would have been 50:50 or so.

man I started to say something glock vs 1911 type shite but ill just say good luck with the recovery. This is a hard lesson learned. Sometimes the most cautious of people make one mistake in an entire lesson and this is what happens. So glad it didn't hit anything vital or someone else. ETA glad it wasn't you.

Probably a 1911. All that fidgitin around with all them sticky do dads, buttons, and what nots, the damn thing went off and shot him right in his hand

I knew there would be some jokes but if one person learns a lesson from this the post is well worth the effort.

there was a pic few years back were a guy in Honey Island Swamp did the same thing with his 50 cal blackpowder. It was on La Sportsman.

Happened to a guy I know. His brother was handling the gun, forgot the one in the chamber and shot the other brother in the leg (who was driving the truck)
Hit an artery, they had to stop, apply tourniquet and got him to the hospital in time to save his live but not his leg.

I can't imagine the pain, embarrassment, financial hardship, and many other problems that would arise from a momentary lapse in judgment.

Ridiculous. A 1911 owner would never shoot themselves in the first place.
Sorry to hear OP. When I was a teenager I accidentally let a round off, however I had the gun pointed away from me so an unlucky bed mattress took the hit. Sadly it was my parents' bed. They were outside at the time of the shooting so I never said anything but somehow they discovered the tiny hole in the sheet that led to the discovery of a hole in the mattress at which point they put 2 and 2 together.

I can't imagine how that guy kept most of his hand after that. That's terrible.
On another note, hope he was right handed so he could still skin his smoke pole.
