Want to try this summer for fun, eyeing a deal from a dude down the street, is 1 5/8” an okay size for shrimp around the hopedale/lake borgne area?

Bag net should be 1 1/4"
Tow lines should be 3/8"
Remember that a 12 foot net is twice as big as an 8 foot. Because: Magic. Or geometry, or physics or whatever.

most important accessary would be a trawl sort box or large wash tub. tie a sealed chlorax bottle on a 8 foot rope tied to the end of trawl bag. That helps manage your turns, alerts others, and provide an easy way to pull off of stumps and pilings

That’s a very small net that most would consider as a “bait” net. I would go up to at least a 12’ but a 16’ would be even better imo.

8ft is a test trawl and is not really gonna catch a lot of shrimp. In prime areas set up correctly your talking 40-50 shrimp every 3-5 mins and that size mesh is gonna be everything even 100+ count.
If you really want to catch enough shrimp to make it worth it even for fun you really need to size up to a bigger trawl and boards.

I pull a 25' with aluminum doors. It catches shrimp but it'll wear you out after a few drags if you don't have help. I'd get atleast a 16' to make it worth your while

quote:there is nothing fun about man handling a bait trawl. You will be filthy, stinky, dog tired and sore after a few pulls and your boat will be covered in mud and slime.

as the others said make sure you have a sort box (dont dump on the deck LOL) and you’ll need at least another person if not two. Depending on where and when you pull you’ll get 90% croaker and catfish and about 10% shrimp if lucky
all that said, if you want to give it a go have someone show you the ropes before you go by yourself and keep in mind if you get that net in your prop you’ll have a very bad day

If pulling for bait 8’ is the biggest you can pull I believe without a trawl license. My dad kept one in a rubber maid tote in the hold of his boat and we would pull 10 minute drags before daylight to catch live shrimp and croaker for a day of trout fishing. If you looking to catch h enough shrimp to fill the freezer I would go no smaller than 16’ but that’s another animal much bigger boards tickle chain etc.

I pulled a 6' bait trawl, and w the boards, I could fit it all in a 5 gallon bucket. I used it to catch Pogies, et all, and with an extra live well pump, keep the pogies alive all morning No mess, put the whole bag in the 5 gallon bucket. Nothing, catches big trout better than croakers or pogies.
