I'm interested in purchasing a 35 Whelen for whitetail hunting, as well as any other large game I ever have the urge to hunt. I'd like to do an elk hunt in the semi-near future so please give me some suggestions on what to buy, as well as scope recommendations. I've seen the Handi-rifle and CVA Scouts that aren't that expensive, but don't know what the OB thinks about them. I would like to stay under $1,200 for gun and glass. Thanks!

With your budget, I would step up to a tc encore or pro Hunter. Cva scout is not a bad rifle from what I've heard.

Buddy has a handirifle in .243, shoots about 4 inch groups.

CVA Scout is a fine rifle but you can step up to an Apex and get the Bergara barrel and have the ability to change calibers if you want.

You should be able to get an Apex for under $600 and that would leave you $600 for glass which you should be able to get a pretty nice scope for that amount.

Go with the Thompson Center and be done with it for life.

No complaints with my CVA Scout and bushnell banner 3-9x40. Zeroed at 200 yds.

Steer clear of the handi-rifle. If that's your price point then get the scout, all day, no debate.

As already evidenced by some responses, a lot of people like what they shoot or have shot. I really, really like my CVA scout V2. It's an absolutely tack driver with the right ammo and the trigger is excellent. Can't say enough good things about it.

Do any amount of reading online and you'll find gripes about any of these guns, but the CVA Apex and the T/C Encore seem to have the most. My personal opinion is that the interchangable barrel system didn't play well with such a heavy caliber at first production. I'm sure the issues have been worked out by now, but I wouldn't buy one secondhand.

Whatever gun you buy, you'll love the cartridge. It's my all season gun now except for the furthest of shots.

I have a CVA Stalker Elite... had for about 6 years now.. it is a great shooting rifle. I shoot Barnes 180 gr. TSX bullets and will start reloading my own loads next year.
I saw a Nosler bolt action for about $1900.00.

Some people swear by the 180 grains but the 225 bear claws have been awesome for me. If there's a more accurate bullet I'll never be able to shoot good enough to tell. Plus that silver just looks cool.

The Apex is a lot better and you can order other rifle caliber Barrels for $188 on the web site that comes with the warranty book

I'm also shooting the 225gr Bear Claws and I think they are pretty awesome.

I didn't even know they were silver when I ordered them... I now refer to them as my werewolf killers.

The next box I am going to try is the 180gr from double tap. The 225 core locks have been fine out of a bergura barrel on a tc.
