very similar to the 7mm-08 IMHO
Finding ammo isnt exactly a walk in the park.
My suggestion is when you find it, get 4-5 boxes.

I always do this with the .243 WSSM. Of course, I also do it with my 30-06 if the ammo is reasonable. Having too much ammo is like having a car that's too fast.

243 all the way.

With my kids - 20 shots, 20 deer. Low recoil, ammo readily available. What more do you want?

When my boys get big enough to handle a real rifle, I'm likely getting the H&R single shot in 7mm/08. I like what the cartridge has to offer, though I've never personally shot it.

Meh, short vs long. 30-06 case vs. .308 case. Really not sure 25-06 really has a job anymore. NTTIAWW it if you have one. I just don't see them being popular in the future.

Ruger and Remington make a nice rifle in 6mm. Mine is the Ruger, 22" barrel. Surprisingly, 6mm does have a decent following.

i guess i should rephrase..

I have shot them both, and the are both accurate and flat at long ranges, and have minimal recoil...

7mm-08 is the way to go. I bought one of the Ruger compact Hawkeyes SS. It's very accurate and they have a good trigger now.

my son got a 7mm08 youth model 5 years ago he is 12 now...

12 deer 2 hogs and only one has taken a step!..

only change - going away from youth model stock to adult stock.

like the 7mm08 so much my next rifle will be a 7mm08...

savage youth model with accutrigger is best value out there.

I know large grown men still shooting the .243. I am personally in the same boat for my almost 8 y.o. son. I started looking last year (still haven't bought) and I guess either 7-08 or 243 will foot the bill

I have a Ruger .243 M77 Mark II.

Sweet, accurate gun.

Correct answer. This is a lifetime gun and as comfortable (or moreso) to shoot as any other.

I wouldn't do this..

1. poor design and weight distribution = too much muzzle rise..
2. more recoil than nearly all other rifles on market...

3. see reasons 1 and 2..

How old are the kids? I would go with a .223 as my son has killed 4 deer with it and never had one take a step. If you are accurate and shoot the proper rounds the .223 is the way to go as the rounds are cheap and there is no recoil that will cause a young shooter to flinch or hesitate to shoot many rounds at the range. The more they shoot the better they will get.

If you go with a .223 make sure you buy a rifle with sufficient barrel twist to handle 60gr rounds as you will want to shoot solid core or Nosler Partition rounds as deer.

I really like the idea of a single shot because it forces them to take their time more with the knowledge of "I only get one chance". I learned on a single shot and I'm a better shot for it, IMO. What would be some better single shot choices?
