The 25 Creedmoor is the one to get if manufacturers start chambering rifles in it.

Using varmint cartridges to shoot deer is asinine. That includes the 243. Every time someone brings a bad personal experience the foolishness starts. It's not an if but when it will bite you. The baby gun crowd acts like all the bigger cartridges were developed for no reason. Get out of here with that crap.
So you telling me an 80gr Barnes TTSX through the vitals of a whitetail is but a scratch? Gtfo. It's shot placement. That's all it is. Even if you use a FMJ a shot in the vitals is dead. A 243 has killed more deer than most cartridges and still kills them today.
You don't need a 300WM to kill a deer. My brothers 3 kids all killed their first with a 223. I guess they should have listened to you and used a bigger cartridge so it could be more dead.

But it sure is nice to have a little extra horsepower when the buck you’ve waited several seasons for steps out at last light. A couple of steps and he’s back in chest high palmettos or a five year old cutover.

NEED? No. The extra horsepower is nice as long as you can make it land where it needs to. The small bore blood trails can be abysmal sometimes and thats largely a deal breaker for me. I shoot them with a .338 so I dont concern myself with such things.
But, I am hunting with a .223 this year

Exactly! And anybody that has made a perfect shot on everything they’ve shot at hasn’t been hunting long enough.

They are niche big game cartridges, where the older small bore stuff (.22-250, .220 swift, .223, .243, .260
etc) are all varmint cartridges or generally poor big game cartridges with slow twist barrels for sending lightweight bullets as fast as possible.
Ouch

Oh my!! You might need to get checked out. Sound like you might've been abducted by aliens.

With a suppressor, you can now shoot a lot of gun and not have the recoil.

I ALMOST left that one off, but its definitely a victim of wrong twist syndrome in factory rifles.
I imagine you generally get better penetration and less fragmentation at pistol speeds vs rifles? Whats the muzzle velocity on that goofy thing?

Its going to be my kids/wife rifle and I need to test it out on some animals. An AR with a supressor is going to be excellent for them as long as i can convince myself the terminal performance is acceptable.
It sure is nicer to tote around a 16" AR instead of a 26" chunk of field artillery.

Man, why would anybody jack with a wildcat these days?
I think the brass case / smokeless powder / standard bolt face thing is tapped out now. What is there that needs to be done that a factory rifle and factory cartridge cant handle extremely well these days?

My 260 is one of my favorite deer hunting guns and now you're hurting its feelings.

Ok, I'll allow that.

just cautious w/ 22 caliber guns for deer hunting even w/ appropriate bullets
Im going to try the heavy match bullet thing that the western dudes are all giddy about, kinda. They like 77 gr TMKs the most and im trying 73 eldms because thats what I had and they like as well.
Im very skeptical about it, but im being open minded. If it goes poorly id rather it happen to me than my kid. Those dudes are killing elk at 600 yards with them though so I'll give it a try.

I know guys decades ago that hunted with high power rifles that took any shot a mature buck gave them. Guts, hind quarter, didn't matter. They found a few and lost some. So if you made a great shot with a 243 and can't find it, there's a million people with dogs that would love to trail it for you.

I shot a coyote with 68gr Hornady match out of my AR (.223) last year at right at 175yds. They left a fist size hole on the back side. It was impressive.

But in the age of suppressors, why limit yourself to a .243 or less? Even a kid can shoot a 300 mag with a suppressor.

It seems a 7mm08 would be an even better choice than it already was.
The long range guys want the recoil reduction so they can spot their own shots. If 300 yards is a long shot for you and youre willing to aquire a supressor i agree there's no reason to kneecap yourself. Get a .30-06 and blast the shite outta them.
