Yeah it’s funny how their two main defense mechanisms are polar opposites - one is to flatten out cobra-style and hiss…while the other option is to play dead.
Awesome little snakes. This one stayed in character for over an hour - right up until we let it go. The closest he came to acting alive again was to perk his head up like “y’all done yet?”

DeKay’s & mud.
Some people spend a lifetime looking for a mud snake…some people have them randomly show up in the yard.

Here’s a few bites from a black-masked racer I caught last year

Meh…harmless enough to not give it a second thought.

Wow that's funny to hear. Yea that guy came up to the patio and he honestly felt lost. I scooped him up and brought him to some brush.

I need to get a pic of my snake under my home that suns on the steps. He's about 4 feet. Plenty of speckled kings roam the back. Problem I have is I have hawks that live there and they've had babies and seem to be training the kids.

I'll try and get some more pics for identification

This big one was sighted in our yard over the weekend. Is it a Rat Snake? It sure looks like a LA Pine Snake, but I know that Pine Snakes are very rare down here. It had apparently recently eaten a nice meal.

Excuse my ignorance. Is a "black racer" and a "blue runner" the same thing?

Around this area (southeast La.), the northshore has black racers and the south shore has black-masked racers. But when I was growing up, black-masked racers were commonly (and mistakenly) called “blue runners”. But blue racers don’t actually range here - they are more up north. Also, west & north parts of La. get buttermilk racers.

Just got home - 15 hr. drive from Miami. Will update the op tomorrow. Got a couple more tri-colors last night!
