I kind of contradicts the point of something being good if you have to marinate it for 7 days

This terrible daylight paradigm you are inventing where hunters can’t distinguish what duck they are shooting simply doesn’t exist. And it’s how I can tell your experience with duck hunting is probably limited to thrashing a few refuges. For starters, ducks at daylight are typically very vocal. Sitting in pitch black you can usually tell what all is flying over just by listening. Secondly, nobody I know is just blasting shite at daylight at random. If they are they should probably be doing something that doesn’t involve a firearm. Identifying birds on the wing is not hard at all. Unless you are accustomed to shooting every duck you see. And if you are that type of person I can assure you the Federal government is not going to jeopardize the extinction of a species based on your incompetence.

Come to any public duck hunting area in Louisiana on opening day or any day for that matter and you will change your mind
I know plenty of “duck hunters” that arent that great at identifying birds on the wing and even a bird in hand for that matter
Get off your high horse

So your saying it shouldn't be a surprise to what kinda duck it is when you pick it up or the dog brings it back? What kinda fun is that? lol

So because everyone’s doing it, that makes it okay?
If you can’t identify what you’re shooting at, should you be shooting at it?

I never have done it personally but have seen it many times happen close to me

You admitted to doing it yourself. You said 2 or 3 times it has happened to you specifically regarding pintail hens. So lord only knows how many times it has happened with other species.
So get off your high horse. It happens. Even if you think I'm a shite hunter, look in the mirror. You've done it yourself.

I have no words.

Yes. Typically they are. And that's why in one of my examples I specifically called out that 2 pintail hens came in silent. No calling. No indication vocally.

Dude. I'm done. You're so ridiculous. I've got nothing to prove here, and for some reason you can't accept the fact (even though you've admitted to it yourself) that sometimes mistakes happen. Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Am I taking crazy pills?
Dude jumps my shite for admitting that sometimes when I pick up a bird it isnt what I thought it was and that it might cause problems down the road with pintail. Then he admits he has done it several times himself. Then goes back to calling me a shite hunter for that very reason.
I'm just confused more than anything.
Eta: officially banning myself from this thread. OB should be a fun distraction, not this garbage.

quote:yeah, one usually knows what ducks are using the area. Only issue might be hens vs. drakes on a few species. I was supposedly picking mallard drakes on a foggy morning, turns out a few were hens.
I shoot first and identify later

I remember getting my heart broken at 10 years old when we shot up a little bunch of mallards.. go to pick mine that I tracked falling from the sky to the water.. big ole nasty boot lip hen

I got tired of trying to convince myself that they tasted good. Plus they take up so much room in the freezer; there's no easy way to stack them like packs of deer meat.

I've seen federal wardens mistake a grey duck hen for a pintail hen and vice versa. Young pintail hen a grey hen are pretty tough to distinguish at first light. And there was a time in the 80s when the Feds thought the same and didn't let us shoot until sunrise.
