I was driving down the road today and got a check engine light. Pulled into auto zone and got the diagnostic which said it was an o2 sensor. My truck has 116,000 miles on it and first time having this problem. Anybody got feedback on this. I looked online and looks like they can be changed myself. Thanks for the help.

Get the tool to change them. Its easy...Do you know what sensor it is? there are 4 if you have the 5.7

Use to have a car that I had to replace the O2 sensor. It was not a truck. It was a pain in the arse to get the old one off but the new one was easy to install.

Autozone, etc. may have a free loaner tool - O2 sensor socket.
It looks like a plug socket with a slot in the side to clear the sensor wiring.
Put some anti-seize on the threads only of the new sensor.
Finally, I suggest getting the replacement from the stealership to insure the correct range (voltage) of operation.

The same thing happened with mine. I got a check engine light just before I pulled into work. When I cranked up for the three mile trip home, the light came on but everything was checking out fine so I drove home. About a mile from home, the truck turned itself off in the middle of the highway. Luckily I got to the side of the road but I had to get towed to a shop. O2 sensor went out. Good luck to ya. It is a cheap/easy enough fix.

I had a similar issue with my S10 when I was in college. I changed out the O2 sensors and all was fine for a few days, but the CEL came back on. Talked to one of the mechanics at the marina I worked at and he recommended to change the spark plugs and wires because they can cause an issue which mimics an O2 sensor failure. Being that you have over 100,000 miles I would check the plugs and wires as well as the O2 sensor.
