Thursday morning I fly out of NOLA for an Idaho elk hunt. Get there at noon and go straight to the mountains for an afternoon hunt. My first elk hunt. I'm basically useless at work just reading weather reports and watching videos . I'm meeting a group of guys that live there. Yesterday was opening day for rifle and they saw 2 5x5's, a 3x2 and a spike. They said elk are everywhere so that makes me even more pumped and more useless at work . Probably going to make a deer hunt in the morning just to cut down the time I'm at work tomorrow.

Actually $650 for the license and tag. Plane ticket is paid for with credit card points. We are camping so no hotel room or lodging. I'm bringing some squirrels and rabbits to cook for them 2 nights. They are cooking elk and bear the other nights. So just have to buy lunch and snacks.

See above post for the cost. It's some of my mother-in-laws friends she introduced me too so no guide service fee. Because it was so cheap I bought a 300 win mag. So that's what I'll be shooting.

. I have a few friends that are extremely jealous so we are planing an archery Colorado elk hunt next year. 4 guys we figure it will cost around $1k a piece. traveling in 1 truck with an enclosed trailer. Just getting OTC tags. Joined some groups of FB and people are killing 4x4's and 5x5's on public land with OTC so we aren't going to do a draw. That's really reasonable I find. May want to look into doing that with some friends if your interested.

Please post pics of your hunt as well! Did you do a draw or OTC tags? If a draw how many years did it take?

I've killed a few of those in the dreams I've had since my tag came in a couple of months ago.

Where abouts in Idaho? The eastern side of the state near the Tetons is some of the prettiest country I've ever seen.

Forgot to ask, are you bow or rifle hunting?

Hope you got your ballistic chart ready if you are using a rifle for the drop that the bullet will do.

One of my uncles, killed a 6x6 over a decade ago and had to shoot about a foot up from where the elk was due to the thinner air and elevation plus distance.

North of Sandpoint. I went visit last year and it is amazing.

You should see the amount of gear I'm bringing . Its snowing there now at the elevation we will be hunting. So it will be cold but I feel really prepared. And I've been shooting my new rifle on a monopod for the couple of months I've had it. If I miss its because my nerves will have gotten the best of me . Shots will on be 50-100 yards from what I was told thought so I'm not worried about a miss.

I have a vortex scope so this morning I used their ballistics drop calculator for the area we are going just in case I end up with a longer shot.

Good luck. The weather up here hasn't gotten cold yet though. It was 80 degrees on Sunday. It rained a little this morning so maybe a cold front is on the way.
