Hot off the press this morning.

State officials have confirmed seven additional cases of chronic wasting disease (CWD), with a total of 19 cases all in Tensas Parish. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries State Wildlife Veterinarian Dr. Jim Lacour says the first case was discovered two years ago.
“It is a very slow insidious disease, so it takes a long time to get it’s footing into the herd and that’s exactly what we’re seeing at this point.”
CWD is a neurodegenerative disease caused by an infectious, misfolded protein particle, and it is 100 percent fatal to deer after an indeterminate incubation period. The first confirmed case of CWD was detected in 2022.
Lacour says a feeding an baiting ban has been implemented in Tensas, Madison, Concordia, and Franklin Parishes. He says hunters are prohibited from bringing out a deer or deer head with the brain in it but.
“If you’re going to bring a deer out of that area, it can be deboned, cut and wrapped, watered with the spine and no nervous tissue. You can bring out the skull cap and antlers. You can bring out the cape.”
LDWF has set up 13 free CWD collection sites throughout the region including Catahoula, Concordia, Franklin, Madison, Morehouse, Tensas, and Union Parishes.
And while CWD has not been found to be contagious to humans, CDC recommends not to consume a deer known to be positive. LaCour says LDWF provides free testing for hunters across the state.
“If you know a deer has chronic wasting disease, you should not eat it. If you’re hunting in an area where chronic wasting disease has been found, or known to be found, you should have your deer tested before consuming it.”

I would be some kinda nervous if I was an equity shareholder in any of the nearby areas.

I guess this just a CYA government statement, but its still concerning to me.
The only way to do this would be to process the deer, put in freezer, wait 6 months(??) for the test to come back before eating any of it.

Gov has no need for CYA. .
Also, i wonder why the slow, quiet rollout of the news this year vs. the last two.

I got a message from MDWFP stating first case in Claiborne County two days ago as well. It's moving as unfortunately expected.

The bigger issue is that a lot of the processors aren’t giving you back “your” meat. And they damn sure aren’t completely cleaning everything between deer that they process.

We have to harvest more deer. Here in KY the population is crazy high.

Stop congregative feeding. Make sure deer are masked and staying at least 6 feet apart. Make sure deer are washing their hands and cleaning surfaces.

And the preliminary location description I read was basically right across the river from the Winter Quarters area.

Tests take 3 weeks max. I’ve had every deer tested that I’ve killed since CWD was found in MS. It’s no inconvenience at all.

thats way faster than I expected. still have to process the deer though. Although since currently the odds of a deer you shot having cwd is near zero, it wouldn't be that big of a deal if lighting struck and you do have to throw it all out.

Do you process yourself or freezing then taking to the processor after results are in?

Yea, they have been able to track back deer in other cases. WQ may have greased the wheels to keep their name out of it.

It was so out of hand that the wildlife manager quit and took another job.
