What are yalls thought and opinions on the 2.7 liter 4 cylinder motor in the 97 Tacoma’s? I’ve been looking for a single cab 4x4 in good condition and man they’re hard to find and people want a fortune for them. I found one that looks great and has 200k miles, lifted with mud tires, not a dent on the truck, clean undercarriage, and no tears on the interior, but it’s still more then I’m wanting to pay. It’s just really hard finding one that’s not dented on every panel and seats torn apart.

They seemingly stop depreciating at $10k but seriously it’ll last forever and go anywhere you point it

Think 7k would be over paying for a very clean one?

I had a 98 single cap white 4x4 in high school.... no lift... just buckshot tires. Did some circles around a 4x4 tractor we had stuck out in a rice field one time.

You literally couldn't get it stuck.

Make sure the timing chain ain't original if you can. That's about the only weak link on those old engines supposed to replace at 100k intervals I believe.

I looked for a while like you and ended up getting a single cab F150 manual with the straight 6. Just got tired of looking and people wouldn't take less than 8k for a clapped out 20 year old truck

Thanks. How would you tell if the timing chain is original or not?

No true way to tell unless the owner kept records. SOME chain manufacturers include a sticker that can be dated and put on the timing cover. But that would also require the mechanic taking the time to date it and put it on there also.

My second vehicle ever when I was 20 yrs old was a '97 Tacoma. I had it until I was 28 and sold it to put a down payment on a 4Runner after my wife got pregnant. I really wish I would have never sold it because I was dumb and thought I had to have a large down payment back then. I realized shortly after that I should have kept the truck and just financed the extra money I got from the truck.

F U man for reminding me I traded my baby away . JK If you can find one in decent shape, go ahead and pull the trigger imo. They're damn near bulletproof.

I have the 97 4x4 extended cab with the 3.4L and It maneuvers through slop and will Easily crawl up a steep incline as well.

The early eighties model of that single cab 4 cylinder was nearly unstoppable in the mud. Ran one to 300,000 + miles until that 4 cylinder just didn't have enough compression left to turn the buckshots.

Buy it asap! But don't expect to be able to get any spare parts for it for a long long time!

Single cab is tiny. I don’t fit in the cab of one that vintage.

The double cab models weren't produced until the 2004 model year. Also, the V6 and V8 motors had timing belts, not chains...

I know that these trucks were great and all, but like you and everyone has said, they are way over priced.

if you're looking for a small 4x4 pickup, open your eyes to the Jeep Comanche (MJ). They were produced from '84-92 and the 4.0 is a hell of a motor. You can find clean one's for <$6k.
