meauxjeaux2, I have a 2006 Lincoln mark LT with the 5.4, I have 46k miles on it, would it be better to change the plugs now (before too much build up) to the one peice plugs or just wait till I have problems?

I changed mine and my dads, broke 1 in mine and 3 in my dads
Don't know if it helped but I ran seafoam through my tank cracked them open while the engine was still hot, about a quarter turn, and put some penetrating oil in there and let her soak for 15-30 mins.
If you do it yourself have the tool ($100) handy along with u joints and extensions, the tool works really well but you will wind up with some ceramic left in the hole :/, ...........15k miles since I changed them and no issues with the ceramic I left in.

I run Seafoam through the intake manifold prior to plug extraction. It does help a bit.

Not really sure what tool you used (they make more than one design) but I never leave ceramic in the hole.

I don't have it handy right now, but the one I used would push the ceramic too far down and hit the bottom section of the spark plug breaking the ceramic

That's how all of the broken plugs should look like when removed from the head.
The breakage is the metal band at the end of the plug when the ceramic is pushed through. The broken band will grip the ceramic and not let it fall into the cylinder unless you push down with the tool too far.
My rule is once you hear the band snap,turn the tool 3 times then stop.
Has always worked for me and not one piece of ceramic has ever fallen down in the hole.

I figure I'll have some break. I had never heard of this before. Would I be better of just waiting till it starts missing before doing it?

So, what you guys are saying is, if I get one of these fancy tools, I can do it without dropping stuff in the heads?
In that case, I'm less worried.
MONEY is always my problem. Devoting 3 days to changing spark plugs out is a bitch, but time is something I can come up with.

Look,anyone here can work a backhoe,or a dozer but can they do it without completely fricking up their hunting lease?
It takes a little knowledge on how to use these specialty tools properly. Luckily for me when I worked at Ford,I was sent off to class to learn how to work on these on non functioning engines and cutaway cylinder heads.

Seriously,don't wait if you don't have to.
BTW-You need to ask your mechanic if he charges extra for removing broken plugs. Sounds to me like he just went directly off of Book time when he quoted you the job.

That's how mine looked except the ceramic was cracked on a couple of them, I must have turned it down too far, the instructions said to tighten until the nut hit the body of the tool, I want to say it was the lisle tool
On a different note, how much will the ceramic effect the engine, I'm at 15k plus I since the plug change

Yea he told me it was gonna be 400 to change them but mentioned it could go up with any issues encountered. I trust him and know he wont screw me over so that isnt really an issue. Just was curious how common it is for them to break so I have a half assed idea of what im getting into

I know he has the tools. This is actually a Ford dealership but does more mechanic work than car selling. He may sell 20 a year.

I had to get mine changed out,along with "retuning the chip or something like that" cost 700 here in BR at Plantation tire and car repair shop on Drusilla, felt robbed, glad to know that I wasn't the only person stuck with this bill. that being said I have not had any problems since then, and that is the only really problem I have had with the truck. 135k and rolling.
