$400 is a decent price for the job IMO. Spraying the anti-seize on them for a few weeks prior to replacent really does help and may save you some money. A tool has been made that really helps in keeping them from breaking too that wasn't out when I had my '04 so you do have that going for you.

Just a random question, but does yours make the loud ticking in the motor? Almost sounds like lifters knocking. Mine made that noise and it drove me crazy.

Almost the same kinda tick like the valves on a diesel motor? If so then yea I hate that but so far its been a good truck.

Yeah, mine was so loud. It was a good truck up until the point I switched from castrol to royal purple. It went to shite after that. Stay away from that junk.

Not for sure, but I've read that it's "cam phasers" whatever the heck that is. Mine started ticking real loud around 65,000 miles and ticked up until the day I got rid of it. It scared me when I first heard it.

It's not good to swamp from conventional to synthetic and then not do some short-interval oil changes at first.

ETA: At least that's what I was told.

My truck was fine until I put royal purple in it. I'll never buy another quart of it. For that matter I'll never run anything but motor craft 5w-20 as long as I have an f150.

Just saying it may have been a coincidence, royal purple is definitely one of the best quality oils you can buy.

Supposedly running conventional for a long time and then swapping to synthetic is bad because it breaks loose some shite in your motor or something

It makes sense. I did the opposite. I ran full synthetic for a few oil changes then went to the cheap stuff. Sometimes I buy motorcraft synthetic blend when there's nothing else on sale.

I'm sure that switching strait to a synthetic from a conventional oil didn't help the situation, but I'm still gonna stay away from it.

I've been worried about this as well. I could use a tune up in my '05. I've heard bad things. But didn't they fix this issue eventually? I can't remember which year it was fixed.

last 3 I've done at least 3 broke and I did it while the engine was hot with heat resistant gloves.
That's the recommended way to pull them since it softens the carbon deposits on the inner plug piece.
BTW,to the posters saying soak the plugs, this does nothing to break up the carbon on the bottom piece of the plug. That penetrating oil cannot pass up the threads on the plug and get down to the carbon buildup on the bottom part of the plug.
I put only the one piece plugs back in so it doesn't happen again. They're more expensive but goo piece of mind for the next plug change.

BTW,FT If your mechanic said he'd do them for $400 and that includes removing any broke pugs, that's a hell of a deal since most of those plug jobs at shops start off at $600 not including the plugs.

I know most shops around here will tell you to be prepared for a $1000 bill just in case.

I charge $400 and you bring me the plugs. Don't matter if all 8 break,it's $400 labor. But I don't have the overhead of a shop like most do.

if it's a 3 valve 5.4 then you have the 2 piece plugs.
