I buy the big cans of Prairie Belt. Man those melt in your mouth. My barn, tractor tool box, boat, truck will have various canned delicacies from Vienna sausages to King Oscar 2 layer sardines, smoked oysters, potted meat which is Cajun caviar, Spam, canned corned beef, deviled ham even kippers.

By themselves or saltines or white bunny bread. Hogs head cheese, cracking and boudin make the cut as well.

Same.

How did this tradition start?

Every single time my dad took me fishing, we ate Vienna Sausages. Every single bait store sold them. It was like a rite of passage. Never ate them at home. Never on a road trip. Never on a camping trip. Only while fishing.

I intend to take my little to the lake this weekend, and I intend to buy Vienna Sausages too. I don't know why.

Just a random tradition?

Someone should write a book about this. It had to start somewhere.

My mother always boiled a bunch of eggs and put them in a ziplock baggie for us whenever we went hunting or fishing and she would always put one of those disposable salt shakers in it too.

Not particularly. But it reminds me of being a kid when my grandpa used to crack open a can for me and my little bro with ketchup and miracle whip mixed together.

Little things bring back good memories.

I'll eat them maybe twice a year, but I like them fine.

Now, potted meat is a different story. When I was probably 15, I had the flu hit me HARD about half an hour after I had downed two potted meat sandwiches. I can't look at a can of it without feeling nauseas

Love them when on a boat. My go to is a chicken biscuit at the gas station, then about 9:30 i eat a can of vienna's and drink a coke, and around 12 i eat a bologna and cheese sammich with sriracha, mayo, mustard and a slice of cheese. Sometimes i double up on the bologna depending on the weather. Oh and don't for get a good can cocola

the juice

Uncle used to pour the juice on a piece of white bread. Called it a ‘slip down sandwich’.

I liked the sausages ok, but couldn’t do that mess...

Also, best high school team bus food fight ammo ever.

Regulars (plain) sliced long ways, placed on white sandwich bread with a healthy schmear of mayonnaise is pretty damned good.

Love them. Mashing one between 2 saltine crackers without breaking the crackers is an art form...and delicious.
