Just put down a great downhill run.
Now it’ll be up to the slalom.

When do they start the slalom?

She doesn't sound confident.

Man I could see that coming. That interview a few minutes ago she wasn't in the right frame of mind

What a mental case.
She openly said right before the race how much she was thinking about messing up. What elite athlete thinks like that way?

Amazing to develop the yips during the prime Olympics of your career
It’s crazy because she was skiing well in the speed disciplines and continued to do well in those.

5/10 women have failed to complete the course. We should know the medalists in 5-10 minutes.

It's been fascinating to see how Bikes and Shiffrin have been covered. Shiffrin actually tried yet she's the one who has gotten the exploitative video clip treatment showing her failing and emotional. With Biles it was every fricking night about mental health and how she is such a hero. Ridiculous AF.

I think the Shiffrin coverage has been fair. She gives candid interviews and doesn’t talk in cliches. The coverage is neutral to favorable with sympathy for the best skier having a very bad two weeks.
The Biles coverage was pathetic. If she had the twisties and couldn’t control her movement in the air, then it isn’t a mental health issue.
It’s a cognitive issue and is very unfortunate as well.
But Biles, her team, and NBC tried to play it both ways

Damn, Michaela gives some very candid interviews. No cliches, no empty placeholders, no thanking god like a verbal tic, actually answers the questions but doesn’t use any easy crutches.
Definitely someone I’ll be cheering for in the future.

You misspelled "she is high af".... Seriously, she is either seriously high or has altitude sickness.

Agree 100%. I wonder how long it takes one of these streaming services to outbid NBC for the rights. It's sad that there's now 2 generations who only know the NBC Olympic Show and not the Olympic Games. I hope there is a day where there's at least split coverage like what's starting in the NFL next year (TNF only in Prime). Let NBC do their 6 hour highlight show and let Prime/Netflix/ESPN+ just air the sports without all the human interest stuff.
Just watched the run again on NBC and yeah...you could see in her face that she is completely lost. With the stories about her and her dad I don't think this is a complete surprise. Hopefully she's back in 4 years...she deserves the record.

I think NBC does a solid job (the entire production, not necessarily Primetime).
The coverage on USA and the NBC Olympics site does pretty much what you’re saying. The Primetime show, not so much.
I used my paid time off for one week of Tokyo because I had a lot of PTO carried over from 2020. Only took one day this time and have generally just not been a great employee this past week and half but have gotten a ton of Olympics coverage.
It requires planning it out a little in advance but part of it is the jam-packed schedules (almost double the number of winter sports in the past two decades) and part of it is the time zone difference. So the degree of difficulty for NBC is certainly there.

Very candid interview. Not making excuses.
I hope she comes back in four years so her Olympic career ends on a better note.
I blame it all on crappy Chinese snow and crappy Chinese runs.

quote:Bingo! They did great with the X-games sports but those Alpine courses were terrible. During the Day -1 training sessions I thing they even commented on how the snow was more like fiberglass. They ran their races last week then this week there's been natural snow that hid grooves in the hard pack. (She even commented that she thought a groove she didn't see could be why so wiped out.) Her coach won their lottery to set the course and a she was about to run they commented that he made it simple for her.

Her bf is a skier so hopefully she can just go take some time off and he can be there for her to work through this. Take the rest of the year off and come back with a clear head. I'm sure her dad dying during the lockdowns and not being able to escape to the slopes had an impact as well. Maybe her mom stepping back from traveling with her would be beneficial too. Unlike NBC's Tokyo darling, she is so likable, raw, and an open book. I don't think there's been a US winter athlete who has deserved empathy like this since Dan Jansen fell his after his sister died.

I don't understand why she kept trying and didn't just quit. That seems to be the well recognized path to fame and acceptance these days.
I guess no Sportsman of the Year award for her.
