never said he was from Michigan, dumb arse.
if Phelps was from Michigan, a state the size of Sweden, Phelps would never have come close to the most famous athlete from there. That’s the point, dumabss. And Phelps was far more of an icon than mondo

Just like mondo, Phelps would be greatly overshadowed by athletes from Michigan that played far more popular sports, just like mondo is in Sweden

Hence why saying mondo surpassing zlatan as the most famous athlete in Sweden is absolutely ridiculous

In 2012 Phelps would have still not been more famous than magic johnson. Just like RIGHT NOW, mondo is still not in the realm of being more famous than zlatan in Sweden

It isn’t remotely arguable

Magic Johnson hasn't played in over 30 years. He is not the most popular athlete right now. Some people might argue it's Floyd Mayweather. Let's do your stupid idea of checking their social media accounts. Oh look. Floyd has 2.5 million more followers than Magic on Twitter.

I’ve got a better way to drive this fricking point home. Louisiana has a population of 4.6 million, less than HALF of Sweden

And Mondo actually born and raised here. Truly one of us. He isn’t remotely in the stratosphere of most famous or popular athletes here RIGHT NOW

And even if he was competing for the us it still wouldn’t be close either

It's a dumb point. The US has a huge sports culture. There are so many elite athletes in the southern US. Sweden has very few elite athletes on the world stage. When they have one they take greater pride in them due to not having many to begin with.

Mondo and zlatan go make public appearances in Sweden tomorrow. Zlatsn would get so much more fanfare it wouldn’t be in the same universe

A point I haven’t even brought up because I didn’t feel like it

Mondo wasn’t and still isn’t exactly seen “as one of them”. Didn’t live there. Didn’t grow up there. Could barely even speak their language and still won’t do interviews in Swedish besides saying a few sentences every now and then

Because it was a stupid point. Sweden has so few famous athletes that an American with a Swedish mom can be their top athlete right now.

I find it odd the Americans in here seem to be so in tune just how much Sweden has nothing in sports life and falls in absolute love with a pole vaulter not from there at all

I actually at least reached out to someone currently living there. In uppsala where mondo actually trains.

His opening response to comparing mondo to zlatan was great

Dude fired from the hip so fast he didn’t remember to switch to English

Translation :

"In Sweden, we don't care about any bought-in Swede who jumps a stick on a mattress. To say that Mondo is more popular than Zlatan who dominated a world sport is brain dead. Even Truls Möregårdh will be more popular than Mondo after the Olympics."

I eventually got him to have a discussion in English. Basically comes down to track and field there also just isn’t big

I was simply trying to see and gauge it.

You’re still confused. We’re talking about most popular right now in Sweden.

You’re arguing most recognizable.

You should start talking about what we’re all talking about.

Looking from it from his side though. It’s your job.

One company is going to give you all the health insurance you will need, if you get hurt, they aren’t gonna replace you for someone not as good. They are going to let you bring in your own team to work with. The pay is going to be better. You will have more opportunities to bring in funding from other sources because you are in a market that doesn’t have as many competitors. You get access to the European tournaments.

Other-side you got a great big tough schucks if you get hurt. You have to deal with their staff that may not fit your style of training. Lots more competition from athletes in more popular events for shoe deals and sponsors.

He chose a much better employer.

Loyalty is for suckers in the corporate world today.

I don’t disagree

Just funny to see the reaction certain people get when they choose themselves over the USA vs others.
