my only concern about them being dead first is rotting the water and spreading nasty cat germs

Hm, you bring an excellent point to the table.

Solution: the cats will be numbed.

Well, we need to think about collateral damage. Two wrongs don't make a right, Meat.

I heard someone on talk radio the other day saying that there has been similar incidents such as this well disaster in Russia years past. On numerous occasions, they detonate a small underwater nuclear explosion, the shock of which stops the oil flow.

Supposedly, this would work, and it's not any new technology. Anybody ever heard of this?

this has been done about a dozen times in russia. Always on land wells and always on a gas well.

It would also go against multiple nuclear treaties.

We also have no idea what type of environmental damage could be caused by this (it isn't like Russia cares).

It has been ruled out by nearly everyone in the government and labeled as "crazy" by senior nuclear scientists.

Russia did it to stop a huge gas leak, not oil... would probably work the same. Except I don't think that one was a mile underwater.

Didn't know this.

Surely, if we advised the world of what we were detonating, and why, the UN would grant a one time waiver, right?

It can't be much worse that the environmental damage happening now.

More reason to believe it would be efficient.

I thought all nuclear scientists were crazy to begin with?

a friend of mine had mentioned the nuclear option this weekend, and so I did some looking into it. It is not a good idea IMO.

And that brings us back to the original discussion. BP probably gets lots of these ideas that sound good on the surface, but really aren't. The public hears the surface points, thinks that there are a bunch of good ideas out there, and sees BP not using them. They then logically conclude that BP doesn't care. Except for the fact that the ideas are actually pretty crappy.

BP still being in charge of this at this point is a joke was more my point than to stop using oil, idiot.

Actually, Obama said in his presser a few days back that his administration has been in control of the effort from the start and that BP is acting at the gov't's direction.

Then he went on to place all of the blame "squarely" on BP.

Go figure...

the more and more I think about the nuclear option, the more ridiculous I think it is on so many levels.

ETA: Rich Pryor served in the office of science and technology from 1982-1984. So it isn't like he is abreast of the current issue. Granted, he is a VERY smart individual.
