Spent all mornings in research workshops....

Some quick interesting points:
1) BP is denying access to research sites by scientists looking to do research on the effects of the oil spill on the marsh. Further, marsh lands held by private groups are being denied to access by scientists for fear of "damaging the marsh"
2) The feds are not denying access to research areas by scientists (provided they are on public lands) looking to investigate the effects of the oil on the marsh.
3) Any research which IS being conducted is on a gag order from data release or publication, until "It can be fact checked" in regards to potential litigation.
4) Some researchers who did take samples had their samples seized by BP.
5) NOAA and BP, despite promising hundreds of millions in research money have not released ANY yet, although they promise it will happen "soon"
Take it for what it's worth.

How? Are these BP thugs armed or something?

I assume so, because BP has hired Talon Security. Think a group similar to Blackwater. However it was not my sampling and I was not involved, so I can't comment exactly. Had it been me, they would have had to pry them from my cold dead hands All attempts to conduct research must be approved by BP's incident command.

Since when does BP = IRB? Bastards

It's basically a research blackout. It's a shame, because the effects are occurring NOW, and need to be studied.
ETA: I did speak to some individually, mostly younger scientists, who were and had conducted guerrilla sampling efforts, using the cover of night, etc.... I was impressed and said I'd be happy to help

Legitimate researchers are getting screwed because of a few idiots.
One incident from last week occurred when a shrimper claimed that all he could catch was shrimp contaminated with oil. He brought a sample of his catch to be tested and it was BP Oil Castrol 10W-40. He was arrested for fraught since he was trying to make a claim.
A few weeks back a boat of so called media personnel was caught with caged birds attempting to access a marsh area that had been coated with oil. After doing some checking the people in the boat were from environmentalist group out of Canada.

Totally agree with you. BP should not have the power to prevent people from doing research on land that does not belong to BP. Approval of said research should be up to the IRB overseeing the respective research groups, whether that be a university or some government agency such as Wildlife and Fisheries or NIH.

These environmental morons don't get it.
This is gonna be bad ecologically. Instead of shooting themselves and us in the foot, they should just let us (researchers) do our job.
We all know what the outcome will be (see Valdez)...and trust me a scientist with legitimate data and analysis in a legal proceeding as an expert witness is FAR more effective than a picture of a bird covered in oil when it comes down to reality.

Not much has changed since I got thrown out by BP a couple weeks ago. My information regarding the incident was submitted though.

It can't.

what would happen if researchers or whoever else was out there told bp and talon to shove it up their arse? talon has the power to arrest people? i wouldnt think so. good luck with all the research and work involved.
also, wouldnt it be bp/security who was committing a crime by boarding someone else's boat without permission?
