CptBengal,
I don't know much about the gulf dead zones (other than seeing their effects on oceanographic sensors throughout the gulf), but we were talking at work the other day about the possibility of this expanding the dead zones as the bacteria eat the oil..
basically, bacteria finds a suddenly abundant food supply and reproduces, so lots of bacteria eats the food, and all of the bacteria uses oxygen, so dissolved oxygen numbers plummet and create a dead zone.
Is this a realistic course of events, or are we completely off base here? I've gotta admit that I don't know much about undersea biology.

Yep from everything I understand, and the volume of oil could radically increase the population. But I don't work on the microbial loop and would not be the best person to ask about the changes to the microbial loop because of this.

Thanks for the info, I did not see that and will read it tonight!
Bay, google pelican cruise oil plume and you should find the info you are looking for. Although that cruise did not find any oil plumes per say it was the first to bring it to americas attention. Various scientists and experts from 3 different universities were on the cruise and all are scientists who are well published regarding hypoxia events in the Gulf. They talked about the possibility of a very large hypoxic zone as a result of the plumes and subsequent fish kills.

"While this data set does not conclusively demonstrate that hydrocarbons found in waters collected from
northeast and southwest of the Deepwater Horizon MC 252 well site are derived from a specific source,
it does demonstrate that the concentrations of hydrocarbons in these waters are generally low. These
data further indicate that concentrations of TPH and PAH16 from waters collected from stations 152 n.
miles southeast of the wellhead and from stations 40 and 42 n. miles northeast of the wellhead are not
substantially different."
This sure as hell indicates the dispersants are working. WOW!
Eat up little microbe buddies, EAT UP!!!

Remember, too, that it's not just the oil that the aquatic life is taking on, but the dispersant as well. When other organisms in the food web ingest organisms that contain the oil and dispersant, they will be taking those chemicals into themselves as well, and so on up the chain.

Data from that cruise was the reason we were having the discussion at work. One of my coworkers knew someone on the cruise.

At the same time, scientists have begun measuring the vast quantities of oil hidden to the human eye. Vernon Asper, an oceanographer and marine professor at the University of Southern Mississippi, was part of a group that landed at Cocodrie, La., on Sunday, after completing a two-week research trip in the gulf. Asper said they documented plumes of oil 2,000 to 6,000 feet below the water's surface, covering an area 4 miles wide and 15 miles long.
Bacteria in the water naturally break down oil, but that process sucks up large amounts of oxygen. Such a scenario could cause dead zones similar to a seasonal one caused by nitrogen-rich runoff down the Mississippi River.
"We're concerned about that, because everything that lives down there at these depths in the water needs oxygen, so if you use up all the oxygen they're going to be impacted," said Ralph Portier, an environmental science professor at Louisiana State University.
Portier said he also feared that the deep oil plumes could emerge years or even decades from now, potentially threatening coastlines for generations.

Ed Overton from LSU and several other scientists from around the country were on as well discussing the oil plumes.

Wow I just read the beginning of this thread and cptbengal straight up made tigerfred, mylsuhat, and tigerbaitn08 look like complete idiots in this thread. Those 3 happen to be the biggest BP apologists, and blow this off as no big deal posters on the oil board.
AWESOME. Thank you for confirming my suspicions.

we never said anything about BP being in the clear or not at fault, we are realist that have a WAY better understanding of what is going on and dont believe everything that someone with a Mass Comm degree is claiming gospel

The doom and gloomers around here run and won't respond after facts are presented.
I have never apologized for BP.
As an admin here I have also let everyone express their opinions and haven't banned one person for posts that have been made on this particular board. I have tried to keep the board civil from both sides. Many can tell you that I have gave them a warning about things posted without links or copy and paste posts.
