Are the oyster crops thin these days? I've heard about some of the beds being closed. Anyone know how hard this sector if being hit? I was hoping to get some this weekend in Pensacola...

Don't know about FL but here are the LA oyster bed closures.

I am hearing that oyster prices are up about 40% here locally.

a large number of oyster beds are closed mainly for precautionary reasons. Testing is done routinely on the closed beds and I think only 2 beds have been reported as being impacted.

Thats the problem too, very expensive at the moment and hard to come by.

I'll be back down that way Thurs and Fri and will check in on some of shrimping buddies to see how they are doing. They dont have any shrimp for sale but curious how they are doing financially since they make the vast majority of their income in 5 months.

How much do Oysters cost on the Louisiana coast? They are about $15 a dozen in North Alabama.

Typically around $10 per dozen raw, give or take a buck or two depending on where you go. You can get them for half that when these places run raw oyster specials (usually on a tuesdays or thursdays during happy hour).

I typically buy oysters off the boat for $25/sack

Tony's seafood has 1/4 sacks for around $18.

Bought a sack for $25 a few months ago @ Hopedaleas the boat was coming in.

Was in Hopedale again last weekend and checked around. While they seemed to be bringing plenty of oysters coming in, None for sale.
The resturants are paying premimum for guarantees

They are bringing in oysters. Most distributors have 4 boats coming in a day, but now they avg only 1 boat of oysters coming in a day.

Those guys travel crazy distances at 7 mph as is and most have oyster leases throughout various parts of the state. However available ground is getting slim now.

Apalachicola oysters are also hot in the panhandle of Florida. You may be able to get some local oysters in FL. Don't know though.
