shite changes. Fact.

You're absolutely right...

and yet, with the greatest damned minds on the planet...

WE'RE STILL AN OVERWHELMINGLY PETROLEUM BASED ECONOMY/SOCIETY.

Why?

Because despite all the lamentations and gnashing of teeth, the internal combustion engine is the most efficient source of motive power for transportation.

There's no damned conspiracy by oil companies to quash the technology...it does not exist...PERIOD, and the current alternatives have inherent problems that likely will not be overcome for DECADES even with full bore R & D.

The ONLY legitmiate alternative is NUCLEAR and most treehuggers want nothing to do with that.

So don't sit there and try to talk down to me like I am some kind of goddamned idiot.

There's no gnashing of teeth because greedy people, like the ones who run BP, are counting on you to make this incredibly stupid argument.

Maybe you're right, the internal combustion engine is the most efficient source of motive power.

But to a thinking person, the goal isn't to come up with a better engine.

It's to figure out a way to reduce the need for motive power. That is, getting people to drive less, carpool.

It means encouraging less distribution of goods and encouraging using the resources in your local community. The slow food movement is an example of this.

It means improving our way of life as a country. So instead of my dumb roommate coming back to the apt with 10 DVDs that he bought, all using petrol products to manufacture and distribute them. He could buy 1 DVD and we might actually have friends over and hang out and do stuff than sit in front of the couch like mindless idiots.

Or, if you think that's just candyland talk. Look at Netflix. You can get the movie streamed to your home. No need to drive anywhere, no need to have a DVD case made of plastic, etc.

Well why don't you move to a communist country where the government will have no problem making all of these decisions for you. Unfortunately for you our country was founded on individual freedoms, and there is still a good amount of folks who enjoy that.

Who the hell is saying the govt is making the decisions?

I'm saying that capitalism will eventually lead us away from petroleum based goods, production, and distribution.

All the same, I don't get why conservative complain when you, ya know, actually ask them to CONSERVE.

How many years has this been encouraged? Fact is, people enjoy their freedom to come and go as they please and not be dependent on someone else.

So I guess the residents of the Louisiana coast also have the freedom to enjoy the tar, oil, and gas that will destroy their livelihoods?

USA! USA! USA!

Don't you get it? It's not a black and white issue. Sure, people can enjoy their freedom to burn fuel and petrol so they can live the life they've always lived. Or they can accept some government regulations which might have prevented this clusterfrick.

It's not either complete freedom or complete regulation. It's a necessary synthesis. And without it, we are in the shithole situation we have.

What is it about conservatives that they can't even suggest people CONSERVE?

You live in a bubble and obviously dont understand the world. I hate to scream but maybe your music from your 1 DVD is turned up to loud. NO ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCE WILL BE AVAILABLE WITHIN 20 YEARS TO SATISFY THE GROWING ECONOMIES OF USA,CHINA OR INDIA. It is prudent to pursue every means possible for energy sources and be good stewards of the environment. These economies have cars now, the're not going back to bikes and horses. Ships have diesel engines. We have a petroleum based infrastructure. I dont care how much solar, wind, rubber bands you have its not going to be developed on the large scale for 20 years. So drill baby drill and MYM. Da!

and I hope others do not either. Redesigning BOP's should be failry doable in short order. That and capping this well would go a long way to help with peoples confidence. The President can enact a ban he can lift it with the stroke of a pen.

I don't expect to see a major BOP redesign. I expect to see a major casing running/cementing procedure redesign.
