...so, those laid off should relocate to North Africa or Brazil. Ok.

Now, what about the local business that support the industry? Oh, yea. They can, uh, become farmers.....yea that's it. But, wait. How do they do that with a farming industry already in place?

oh, hell. they should just wait for the gov't handout checks.....but, wait! they are not directly involved in the oil industry, so they don't qualify.

so, magically the region is suppose to create a brand new industry to sustain all those involved from production to support services. What should Terrebonne Parish do about the drastic falloff of tax revenues used to pay police officers, teachers, engineers, water/wastewater services, etc.?

You have no idea about the principles of economics....do you?

The company I work for was the low bidder on a project that is not going to move forward because the owner isn’t sure they can spend the money because the people that use this facility may be affected by the moratorium. The building is a church and I’m in general construction. Tell me where I can sign up for the BP assistance when I’m multiple degrees of separation away from the oil industry here in bayouland yet I’m being affected by the moratorium.

I work for an Engineering Firm and we have government contracts all over the world. I've worked on contracts in Florida, DC, Tennessee, and here in Baton Rouge and New Orleans so this option is available. I had the option to go work in Africa. I declined, but I had that option.

Almost every state in this country is having to deal with the problem declining tax revenues. it's not just Terrebonne Parish. Hell, California is in a lot worse shape than Louisiana and the Governator banned deepwater drilling there. And we all know they can use the money. I would hate to see Terrebonne Parish go the way of Detroit, but when your industry fricks up this bad and jobs dry up, its a shame but it happens. It's why the mid-west is the rust belt.

I cannot believe you are actually arguing this when you do not know the difference between a drilling rig and a production platform. Yes, there is a major difference and each have a different skill set of workers. So those on the drilling rigs do not have the option of going to the other 3000 PRODUCTION PLATFORMS in the GOM.

GTFO. When I first started on the Katrina disaster all I was given was an address to show up for work only knowing the basics of disaster operations and thrown into the fire. If they are oil workers, I'm pretty sure they can receive the training to work on a platform.

Drilling is where the real money is spent not on a production platform. Drilling operations require round the clock support vessels bringing drill pipe, bulk mud, down hole tools and carrying off the used drilling fluids back to onshore disposal sites. Not to mention the caterers and other staff on the drilling rig. Once in production the support required to sustain is much less. Sure the oil company is making money at that point but unless something breaks there isn't a whole lot of machinery coming in and out. Just crew changes and more provisions.

Look toolbag i live in Terrebonne Parish and you use words like industry frick's up. It wasn't an INDUSTRY, it was some damn Brits that phucked up! Why penalize 10s of thousands of people for 1 companies inadequacies. So if Burger King sells a burger that kills 11 people we should stop all fast food until we find a better way to serve people without killing them. Or do we shut down BK until they figure out what went wrong while the rest of the fast food world, who makes their food right, continues to feed people!

You Fail at comparing this to any other part of history! We did not shut down the shipping industry when Valdez cracked did we? This is a politician pushing an agenda and that is it!

And just what jobs are you going to give the Platform employees once you move the drilling employees into THEIR jobs.

You are an idiot and have no idea what you are talking about are you sure your name is not Obama?

holy frick, you are trying to equate your job obstacles, as a highly skilled employee (maybe even licensed), to a guy who has a HS diploma and took over a family business that has been going on for 30+ years?!?!?!

Stop looking at the one and consider a community of 500,000 people in the tri-parish region. Your situation compared to theirs is apples to Fords.

Their fricking economy was not dependant on drilling.........how does this compare? A ban on drilling won't affect Ditta's Coffee shop in L.A., but is sure as hell will kill T-boy's Rubber & Gasket.

You are not getting this are you?

What kind of Engineer are you?
