I would say for the areas of the marsh with a few inches of oil floating on top of the water its pretty bad.

There is a lot of work to be done.

Some areas around the mouth of the river may be gone for good. How big, i dont know. What scares me is talk of this oil and sheen in barataria bay, that would be real bad.

Its marginal for the marshes at the moment. The beaches in Fourchon and Grand Isle look pretty bad and more is on the way.

I was down there on Tues and the marshes arent too bad but the beaches look terrible. However, much more lurks beneath the surface. We'll be dealing with this for years to come.

It has started showing up in the Terrebonne marshes. Seems to be beneath the surface and going under the boom as evidence in this pic taken North of Lake Barre.

Sums what up? In that picture there is less than 1 BBL of oil in the water with 1 dumb fricking bird that decided to go swimming in it.

No one can say for sure at this point. But I think the main concern is basically knocking the estuaries out of commission for several years and if the oil kills all the marsh grass severe erosion of the already receding coastal marshes. Really bad news for SE LA.

google some stuff about bioaccumulation of oil's chemicals in marine animals. Start with a crustacean (shrimp?), a cetacean(whale?), a turtle (pick a sea turtle), and something else...say monk seal or manatee. See what you come up with after a few days. Are you talking about the wildlife or the marsh?

Not as bad as the media is reporting. However, the underwater plumes of oil definitely make me nervous. Also, how bad the situation is will be determined by future rain fall and tides.

Is this for your own knowledge or are your working an angle for work JT?

Kinda disagree. I think the media has downplayed it quite a bit. It is pretty bad but hard to determine the reprocussions. Only time will tell there

No, just the picture of that one bird as representative of anything in the big scheme of things.

That being said, the big scheme of things is not looking good.

THIS!!

The beaches will be fine. If they can cap the well this week then we can start cleaning the marshes before it gets to bad, Mother Nature will take care of its self to a certain point, however we will have to get out there and help her get started.

As far as the seafood industry, the effect is still unknown, they will be testing for years to come just to make sure the health of our fisherman and citizens are first priority. A lot of closures and effects we feel will be mostly precautionary.

Yes I know it seems bad, but honestly, and I know it feels like there is oil and sheen everywhere, but in the grand scheme of things it could be a lot worse. There is far more oil offshore right now and only a very small % that has actually come ashore. Luckily for us the "Big Blob" hasnt hit us yet.

All that could change very rapidly. A low pressure system in the gulf could be disastrous. We have just begun to feel the effects of this and we will be in for a long ride I am afraid.

Thats the most troubling. The oil that comes ashore is not even 5% of whats out there

So JT this should clear up your question. It is both terrible and not that bad

Worst discharge? Cause it sure isn't the worst environmental disaster as of today. Not saying that wont change, but not as of today
