That was a pretty stupid thing to say for sure.
You would thing he would choose his words better than that. Damage control 101

I saw him say this on the news the other day. I couldn't believe he said it. Something like, "Of course we're working hard on this. I want my life back..." or something like that. Fortunately for him, he will get his life back. Just as it was before. Unfortunately, there are others whose lives won't be the same for a long time, if ever.

come on, yall know exactly what he means by this. is there ever a time when you said something that was just bad timing and/or taken out of context?
all he's saying is that he wants this to be over
all he's saying is that he wants this to be over

Okay, I guess I'll have to field the other side on this one.
Disclaimer: I don't feel "sorry" for him, as he chose to take this job and he makes boatloads of money for it. Also, I think that a lot of the statements made by BP execs have been half cocked and offensive.
With that said, try to put yourself in that guy's position. The guy probably isn't sleeping, his body is starting to physically deteriorate from the stress. The mental stress of reporters hounding you and knowing that you are the leader of the most hated company in the world can't be easy either. On top of that, his company's stock has lost 1/3 of it's value. His compensation for the work that he does is closely tied to the equity value of BP, so he's lost millions of dollars of his personal wealth.
The guy is losing it, and rightfully so.

Not the smartest thing to say, but the response to this has been ridiculous.
The guy's been living, breathing, sleeping and eating this for weeks. Probably has not seen his wife or kids in that time. He's being cast as the "face" of the most evil entity ever to occupy space on this planet since the National Socialist Party in the 1930s and 40s.
People that are looking to crucify him for saying this are just looking for a reason to whine and bitch.

There's 11 other people and their relatives that would love to have their life back as well!
And they never will!
Plus the thousands whose livelihoods are about to be taken away!

You are right. Tony Hayward's response to this is ridiculous.
When BP had a major problem in the past and I worked day and night trying to fix their own frick up there was no sympathy from BP. They paid me to do a job and I got it done. frick Him and his pompous attitude. It isn't one statement it is multiple that he has made.

Had BP been a Japanese company, the CEO would have committed Harikiri by now. Brits always hang on to the bitter end.

Nah. They still call us the colony.

...taken out of context. he is only expressing the want to have this over. sure, his life will get back to somewhat normal, but thousands of fishermen and communities are going to be altered for a long time.
fwiw, I believe he is going to be shite-canned after it is all said and done.

I'm sure it was an honest mistake but this is definitely a major gaffe on Hayward's part. Imagine how upsetting a comment like this would be to one of the family members of the 11 people that were killed.

This is nothing new for this guy :
"The Gulf of Mexico is a very big ocean. The amount of volume of oil and dispersant we are putting into it is tiny in relation to the total water volume"

The biggest enviromental disaster in louisiana history. Yeah, we will be fine. Trust BP.
More shite from Hayward:
"I think the environmental impact of this disaster is likely to be very, very modest. It is impossible to say and we will mount, as part of
the aftermath, a very detailed environmental assessment as we go forward. We’re going to do that with some of the science institutions in the U.S. But everything we can see at the moment suggests that the overall environmental impact of this will be very, very mod

When asked about this clear pattern of illnesses of workers who come in contact BP’s oil and chemical dispersants, BP CEO Tony Hayward callously dismissed the health problems as “food poisoning.”
“I’m sure they were genuinely ill, but whether it was anything to do with dispersants and oil, whether it was food poisoning or some other reason for them being ill,” said Hayward.
“You know, food poisoning is clearly a big issue when you have a concentration of this number of people in temporary camps, temporary accommodation, it’s something we have to be very, very mindful of, continued Hayward. “It’s one of the big issues of keeping the army operating. You know, armies march on their stomachs.”
