Here's what I'm concerned about and hopefully somebody in the industry can offer some input. They're drilling a well that needs to intersect an existing well. This means they're trying to hit a target roughly a foot across from 3 miles away. I know that drilling technology has come a long way but that still seems like a huge amount of accuracy. If they miss, they have to back up a ways and try again, and again, until they hit it.

So can somebody offer some insight about how likely it is that they hit that target the first time?

I'm good friends with someone who works for one of the well control companies currently drilling one of the relief wells. He said that the probability of intercepting the initial well bore is high and that they hit their target most of the time on the first try. I guess that's one of the reasons that each relief well could cost up to $250 million to drill...Take that with a grain of salt, but it's what I've been told

It is true that the deeper you go the slower it will get. We want to hit the right spot the first time. Lets not forget this well has already killed eleven men, which seems to be easily forgotten by those not involved. What we do not want to do is have another incident. We are working as fast and safely as we can and I can tell you no one wants to stop this thing more than the crews working at this site. It is amazing the amount of work going on here and only wish the media would capture more of that and less of the negativity.

How does this work? Do they have to wait for both to intersect the original well or is it possible that they can plug the leak with the 1st one?

DDIII –1st Relief Well – 13-5/8” casing has been cemented. They are running in to set the wear bushing.

DDII – 2nd Relief Well – They have drilled out the cement on the 22” casing. They will perform the formation integrity test sometime this morning.

Deepwater Thanks to you and and the rest of the guys out there working their asses off.

Only one relief well is needed. The second well is being drilled in the event that a problem is encountered with the first well.
