I always understood the only criticism of common core was the injection of politics and ideas into the word problems and reading list.

Have you seen any of the word problems?

but that isn't the only problem. Our teachers haven't been properly taught how to teach it.

frick that. How about the parents who haven't been taught how to do it. My kids come home with math homework and I can only show them how to get the answer the old way. Im starting to think they did this shite on purpose to even the playing field for the kids at home that don't get help with homework.

I do homework with my son every day. Here are a couple of examples from his 4th grade math book:

If 50 genderqueer kids and 50 trans kids all have their gender reassignment surgeries funded by Obamacare, how many evangelical Christian doctors should be forced to perform the procedures if they can only perform two per day?

Over the last 20 years, two million undocumented citizens have come to the U.S. Per year. It is our responsibility to make sure they have enough to eat. If it costs $15/day to feed each future U.S. Citizen, estimate the total cost that our benevolent leader, Barack Obama, should make the top 1% each pay for each new citizen.

I really don't see what everyone is all upset about?

I must be an idiot because I cannot figure out what the hell is going on in the bottom half of that picture.

Basically you, find how many 10's 54 is away from 27. The answer is 2, so there's your 20. Then you have to find the difference between 47 and 54, the first step is to make reach the next "10", which takes 3, and the remaining value is what you have left to get to 54. So it's 20+3+4, it simplifies the math into thinking about values in terms of 10's, which is what most people who are good at mental math do.

I'm probably really shitty at explaining this, but it's how I taught myself mental math as a kid.
