It's as bad as the creationist and the Evolution people. There is absolutely Zero proof either one is 100% fact. Yet they both argue, with the Evolution people being the worst. I believe it's some where in between, and don't give 2 fricks. I came from my daddys ball sack and mothers fertile eggs.

I think you need to define "proof". I'll wait.

Pilots and scientists alike admit that commercial plans never fly high enough to see a curvature.

Depends on several factors. One is the flight path. The curvature is very apparent flying near the north pole. Saw it many, many times even when below 40,000 feet. The other factor is weather and atmospheric conditions. It's really hard to get a completely clear horizon line and you need a pretty wide field of view to even try to pick up the curvature.

Third factor is time of day/night. Flying in the middle of the night or middle of day, it's tough to see. But around dusk and dawn, one can pick up the curvature due to the way the sunlight hits the Earth (again, with a clear field of view).

I'd recommend using something with a flat surface like a piece of paper. Hold it up against the horizon line. If the flight is straight and level around 40K ft, you should be able to see it.

There is considerably more than zero proof in favor of evolution. To say "zero proof of 100% fact" makes no sense. There can be a ton of evidence of something without reaching the level of 100% certainty, so in your use of phrase you basically call 99% equal to zero.

I don't think the Bible describes the earth as flat. THe only place I know of (there could be others, I am not really a bible scholar) is Job 26:7

There are a few passages the flat earthers use to make their claim. Something about the four corners of the earth, something else about the end or the ends of the earth, I think. Not sure about the others.

Creation and evolution? And where might that lie?

God set all things in motion. Evolution is the how and not the why.

This is a very common belief held by most Christians and accepted by the Catholic faith

That's not a library. That's a comic book store.

Iirc, a Catholic priest was the first to pen the basic theory of evolution.

the Earth as we know it today is surrounded by a giant ice wall that we call Antarctica

did you ignore my comment? I gave 4 examples from The Bible that talk about an Earth that is still. I have never read anything in The Bible that implies a round Earth or an Earth that revolves around a Sun.

I wonder what The Friendly Atheist blog's motivation here is.

Being the only sane person in the room? I'm not even sure what you're implying here, unless you are in one of these groups being mocked, that is?

This is the biggest problem I tend to have with religious people that want to call themselves moderates. When another religious person is saying something demonstrably idiotic, why circle the wagons around them and point at the outsider who has noticed it rather than take it upon yourselves to ALSO purge that kind of idiocy from your ranks? Isn't that what most sane people expect from those who call themselves "moderate" Muslims? To distance themselves from the idiots on their side?

Instead, these things are always believers versus non-believrs, as if simply being a "believer" makes everyone similar in their beliefs. You know better. There are a hundred variants of Christianity...we see how differences within Islam create chaos, etc. In no way is this a red versus blue debate...pink and darker pink are currently happy as clams to fight to the death and take all the rest of us out with them...until all those of faith agree on even the basics these are largely debates that need to take place on the believer's side of the fence LONG before anyone starts throwing stones across it at those of us who disagree with ALL of you.

So instead of Catholics, for instance, looking at Young Earth creationists and being very vocal that they do not speak for them and siding with non-believers like myself when these types of topics come up, what ends of happening is they either remain silent allowing these assholes to make inroads in things like Boards of Education altering school curriculum or poke fun at the atheist, doing nothing but giving cover to a variant of their faith with which they themselves don't even agree! All to avoid being lumped in with a non-believer. It's infuriating how much believers want to avoid siding with atheists, even when we 100% agree on certain things.

Only with some serious, serious denial could a "Creationist" claim that The Bible describes The Earth as being anything other than flat

Nothing you posted there looks like it implies flat to me but I could see where a person could interpret that as it not moving through the heavens

Some more biblical support for a flat earth:

quote:

Daniel 4:10-11. In Daniel, the king “saw a tree of great height at the centre of the earth...reaching with its top to the sky and visible to the earth's farthest bounds.” If the earth were flat, a sufficiently tall tree would be visible to “the earth's farthest bounds,” but this is impossible on a spherical earth.

quote:

Matthew 4:8 says, “Once again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world [cosmos] in their glory.” Obviously, this would be possible only if the earth were flat. The same is true of Revelation 1:7: “Behold, he is coming with the clouds! Every eye shall see him...”

quote:

“After this, I saw four angels stationed at the four corners [gonia] of the earth holding back the four winds...(Revelation 7:1).” Spherical apologists are quick to point out that the Greek gonia can refer to regions rather than points. Most translations of the Bible opt for points (the King James version says “on the corners of the earth”), implying that the writer viewed the habitable earth as a four-cornered area.

quote:

The corners could, however, be those regions at the ends of the earth referred to by Jeremiah: “[H]e brings up the mist from the ends of the earth, he opens rifts for the rain and brings the wind out of his storehouses (Jeremiah 51:16).” We shall return to the ends of the earth.

Job 26:10

He has inscribed a circle on the surface of the waters
At the boundary of light and darkness.

Isaiah 40:22

It is He who sits above the circle of the earth,
And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers,
Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain
And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.

Now both sides can claim something off of this but a round disc or a sphere seems like the implication here. Nothing I know of about revolving around the sun, though.

Flat earth ??? No, I've seen the earth from live feeds aboard the International Space Station while serving in the USAF. The Earth is not flat!

Doesn't matter what you've seen or what evidence you have. Flat-earthers BELIEVE the earth is flat, and their belief is just as valid as your "science". And for some reason, it apparently helps if their belief is "sincerely held", so they've got that going for them, too. Take your liberal science fake news conspiracy somewhere else!

No.

I'll admit I haven't read the bible in years. I have read the Old Testament from top to bottom and I recall earth being mention as spherical in the Old Testament.

It DEFINITELY says that the Earth doesn't revolve around the Sun. Can you admit that?

A circle doesn't mean a sphere you know.... Flat Earthers do believe The Earth is circular shaped but they don't think it's a sphere.

Either way, the Bible says many times the Earth stays still. Which doesn't hold up to what you learned in Science class.
